Verizon just reached a ‘key milestone’ on the road to 5G

Verizon has reached a “key milestone” on the road to making 5G a reality — it has finalized the specifications for its 5G radio.

According to the company, 5G will deliver “several gigabits per second throughputs and single-millisecond latencies.” In other words, it will be a whole lot faster than the 4G speeds we enjoy today.

“The level of collaboration that we are seeing exceeds what we saw during 4G. This agile way of developing the specification and working with the ecosystem will enable us to get to market rapidly,” said Adam Koeppe, Verizon’s vice president of network technology planning, in a statement.

Of course, 5G is still very much in its early days. Carriers, including Verizon, have only just started conducting field tests to try and demonstrate the kind of performance that should be expected from the new standard. According to the company, it’s important to create a radio specification, because it provides a set of guidelines for vendors, carriers, and device makers to follow. The FCC also recently started paving the way for 5G, having announced that it would set aside chunks of the wireless spectrum for 5G development and implementation.

Verizon has started pre-commercial trials in New Jersey, Massachusetts, and in Texas. Not only that, but the firm says that it will be the first major carrier in the U.S. to roll out the new standard, however it will likely take a while before anything is rolled out to customers on a large scale.

Interestingly enough, others in the wireless industry are a little unsure of exactly when their firms will be able to roll out 5G. According to T-Mobile, which is also testing 5G, the expected rollout of 5G is likely to be “2020+.”

Moto G Power 5G adds a flagship feature to a budget phone
Render of the Motorola Moto G Power 5G in a white color against a light purple background.

Motorola may be making a play for the flagship market with the Motorola Edge 40 Pro, but budget phones are what the American monolith is best known for. While it won't be making as many waves as the latest Samsung phone or Apple iPhone launch, the newest iteration of the Moto G is always something worth paying attention to, as Motorola is a true veteran of the space and knows what makes an excellent cheap device.

Best of all, this new Moto G comes at a time when budget phone enthusiasts have never had it so good. Previously premium features are filtering down into lower-priced devices, without altering that sweet low price or the features everyone loves. That's exactly what's happening with the new Motorola Moto G Power 5G, which includes a 50-megapixel main camera lens, a larger amount of storage, and a big screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. With the big 5,000mAh battery the G Power range is known for, this could be the $300 phone to grab if you love a budget bargain.
