Want a free phone? Verizon’s LG Lucid 2 hits stores today

lg-lucid-2Check out our LG Lucid 2 review.

Looking to upgrade to a smartphone but don’t feel like spending any money? Starting today, Verizon customers can do just that. The sequel to Verizon’s LG Lucid, the aptly named Lucid 2, was officially announced by the carrier this week. The device, which retails for $350 if you buy it without a contract, will be 100 percent free if you sign a two-year agreement.

While the specs are fairly basic, it’s ideal if it’s your first foray into the world of smartphones. The device will rock a 4.3-inch screen, and a rear-facing 5 megapixel camera, capable of capturing 1080p HD videos. It will be powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor and a 2,460mAh battery, which is pretty hefty for a phone of that size. And, if you, like us, enjoy doing whatever you can do reduce the clutter that comes from so many cords, you can purchase a special case from LG and enjoy wireless charging.

The phone will run on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, comes with 8GB onboard storage — a microSD card can be added to expand storage to up to 64GB — and will have 1GB RAM.

Though it is available today, it can only be ordered online; it will take a few more weeks before it hits the shelves at Verizon stores.

The phone’s camera has some interesting features, particularly for a potentially free device. Time Catch Shot begins to snap multiple photos before the user hits the shutter button, helping deliver better results, and the Cheese Shot, which lets users take hands-free photos — they merely need to say “cheese” to snap the picture.

We’re eager to see how well-received the phone may be, and whether or not offering a brand new smartphone model for free will help to lure in new customers.

Android 12 with Material You launches today, hits Pixel phones in coming weeks
Google Pixel 6 Image Composite.

Google today made the final release of Android 12 source code available after a long beta-testing period, but it's important to note that it still won't roll out to the Pixels or other devices just yet. The new update will land first on older Pixels in the coming weeks, though it'll look best on the Google Pixel 6 when that releases later this month. This update comes with a large design overhaul known as Material You, and a bundle of privacy and security tweaks.

The biggest change is the company's new Material You design language. When the update rolls out, Pixel owners will find that their phone's interface will become a lot more attuned to their wallpaper choices thanks to Google's dynamic color theming system. These colors will apply to parts of the user interface, from the notification center and lock screen to even icons on the home screen and inside of apps that have been updated to support it. The company has also debuted new widgets to match Apple's after letting Android's widget system stagnate for a while. Several parts of the interface have also been redesigned to be larger and bubblier than they were on Android 11.
