Verizon’s Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 tablet gets faster XLTE speeds and $380 price tag

Verizon has announced it’ll be stocking one of Samsung’s new Galaxy Tab 4 tablets, specifically the 8-inch model, which it calls a “family tablet.” The reason comes from the new multi-user mode, where the tablet can be personalized for different people, and everyone gets their own password and access. Verizon will put the tablet on sale in the next few days, and it has been priced at $380, or at $280 if you want to sign-up for a two-year contract.

The Galaxy Tab 4 range was introduced at the beginning of April, and replaces a long line of basic, competitively priced slates from the manufacturer. They’re never stuffed with cutting-edge tech, but that’s not the point. The Tab 4 models are designed for everyday users who just want the benefits of a larger screen, and the familiarity of Samsung’s Android user interface.

Eight-inch screens are fast becoming the tablet screen size of choice. On the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0, the display has a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution, and it shows Android 4.4 KitKat with the TouchWiz UI over the top. Powering the tablet is a 1.2GHz quad-core processor with 1.5GB of RAM, plus there’s 16GB of internal memory, and a MicroSD card slot to boost this figure by a further 64GB.

Verizon is also using the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 to push its new XLTE connection, which offers faster data at peak times, and twice the bandwidth for 4G LTE users, resulting in higher speeds. Launched during May, the service has limited coverage at the moment, so if XLTE is a prime reason for looking at the Tab 4 8.0, you’d be wise to check out if your area is covered first.

The Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 arrives inside Verizon online and retail stores on June 26, and the reduced on-contract price will be available for a limited time only.

Over the years, Samsung has tried to get an edge in the Android tablet game via a handful of features offered by its in-house One UI skin on its Galaxy Tab tablets. The Galaxy Tab S8 is Samsung’s latest attempt to take on the mighty iPad.

It would be futile here to argue how iPadOS 16 has again widened the gulf between the tablet experience you get on an Android device versus an iPad. But that doesn’t mean Android tablets are a lost cause. On the contrary, the Galaxy Tab S8 offers a handful of neat features that transform it into a productivity powerhouse. The Edge Panel is one of the best features on Samsung phones, but it truly shines with the extended screen real estate provided by a tablet. Android doesn’t offer an app dock at the bottom the way iPads do, but the Edge Panel more than makes up for it.
