Could the iPhone be coming to Verizon next year? A report in USA Today claims that Apple and Verizon are in “high level” talks about the iPhone coming to the carrier next year, when the deal with AT&T expires.
It could well be a win-win situation. Verizon would get its hands on the popular phone and the revenue involved, while Apple would tap into Verizon’s 80 million subscriber base.
According to industry insiders, Apple’s exclusive five-year agreement with AT&T is set to expire next year, but AT&T wants an extension.
The greatest problem with a Verizon deal well be technological. The iPhone uses GSM, while Verizon’s network is set to CDMA, which largely operates just in America. But Verizon is planning to roll out a 4G network next year, so talks might well revolve around that. However, according to Information Week, Verizon turned down the iPhone years ago because it wouldn’t be allowed to brand it. However, times have changed and money has a loud voice.
