WatchMe may be the cutest Apple Watch charging stand you can buy — for now

WATCHme
Charging an Apple Watch can be delightful and fun, thanks to the WatchMe. Just crown your Apple Watch onto the charging stand’s head and you have yourself an endearing creature wearing your smartwatch as its one-eyed goggle. However, the stand’s cute factor may ultimately depend on clearing two big obstacles.

The WatchMe, which may be the cutest charging stand for the Apple Watch out there right now, comes from Vivien Muller, a freelance designer based in Paris. It’s a two-part stand that measures 3.56 inches tall and has a hole where the round magnetic Apple Watch charger can be placed. Place an Apple Watch onto the head of the “Watchus cyclopus” and you have a Minion-like charging stand.

The recyclable charging stand comes in three colors: white, black, and yellow. Owners can mix and match colors to create two-color stands. Stickers are also available to give the WatchMe mustaches, a tie, or bowtie.

Muller plans to release a WatchMe app to accompany the charging stand so owners can play animations (e.g., a roaming eyeball) on their charging Apple Watches. However, he notes that there’s currently no way to override the automatic standby mode and that “Apple may reject the app because it’s too simple.” If neither hurdle is overcome, the charging stand would lose a lot of cute points.

The WatchMe has a Kickstarter campaign, which has raised more than $7,600 of its $21,984 goal (20,000 euros) at the moment. The project closes August 20 at 6 a.m. EDT. Estimated global deliveries are expected to begin in December.

Apple may soon allow manufacturers in its Made for iPhone/iPad/iPod (MFi) licensing program to embed Apple Watch charging pads directly into the accessories they build, according to 9to5Mac. This would mean products like the WatchMe could be manufactured with a built-in charging pad rather than a gaping hole where a buyer must place their own charging pad, for instance.

WatchOS 10 is set to be announced during WWDC 2023, Apple's big summer showcase, and it looks like the Apple Watch update might be much bigger than expected.

For the past several years, watchOS updates have been relatively small in terms of new features and overhauls. However, a recent rumor suggests that Apple Watch owners should be in for something big when watchOS 10 goes live.

Why blood glucose tracking on the Apple Watch may finally happen
The back of the Apple Watch SE 2 in its protective case.

The Apple Watch is an incredible health wearable. From step tracking and sleep tracking to 24/7 heart rate monitoring and ways to take ECG and SpO2 readings, there's not much it can't do. But one of its biggest missing features has long been blood glucose monitoring. It's a feature we've heard murmurings about for years and years, and according to one new report, it may finally be happening.

Per a report from Bloomberg, Apple recently reached "major milestones" in its quest to bring blood glucose monitoring to the Apple Watch. The company reportedly has "hundreds of engineers" working on the "moonshot-style project" to make noninvasive blood glucose monitoring on the Apple Watch a reality. And thanks to those engineers, Apple now has a functioning proof of concept for the technology -- a huge step in eventually bringing it to the Apple Watch for everyone.

I bought a $50 Apple Watch Ultra clone, and it blew me away
Pebble Cosmos Engage watch face.

I test many tech products, explore them from weird angles, and write about them for a living. It’s a privilege, but every now and then, things get boring, and you start wishing for something that breaks the mold of being extraordinary. That’s when I discovered the Pebble Cosmos Engage, an Apple Watch Ultra lookalike that fares a little too well at being a copycat. It looks like an Apple Watch Ultra, acts like an Apple Watch Ultra, and only costs around $50.

As the headline goes, it blew me away, but not entirely with how good it is. This smartwatch (aka a glorified fitness band) also bewildered me with limitations and weirdness that made me wonder why I pitched this story in the first place. The Pebble Cosmos Engage surprised me in a few pleasant aspects, and then give me a headache in all kinds of weird ways.
Imitation done really, really well
