Phones don’t get much bigger than the Xiaomi Mi Max

Smartphones with larger than 6-inch screens haven’t been very commonplace recently, but Chinese brand Xiaomi is changing this with the new Mi Max. Interestingly, the name was chosen by Mi fans after voting out alternatives such as Big, Plus, and Pro. It’s a phablet in the truest sense of the word, with a screen size in excess of 6 inches, making it larger than the Galaxy Note 5, and closer in size to small tablets like the Nexus 7. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

The screen measures a gigantic 6.44-inches, which matches massive phones we’ve seen before, such as the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, but this is the first time Xiaomi has released a smartphone with a screen this large. The company hasn’t revealed the resolution yet, which we take to mean it’s either 1080p or lower. If it was 2,560 x 1,440p, we expect Xiaomi to have made more of a fuss.

The firm isn’t staying quiet about phone’s dimensions, and although the screen is big, the phone is surprisingly compact. It measures 7.5mm thick and weighs 203 grams, and for some context, an iPhone 6S Plus with a 5.5-inch screen measures 7.3mm thick, and still tips the scales at just over 190 grams. Exactly how easy the phone will be to hold depends on its width, which is 173mm. That’s 20mm wider than a Galaxy Note 5, and 15mm wider than the iPhone 6S Plus. Make no mistake, this is still a phone you’ll struggle to slip into a pocket, at least if you still want to sit down without removing it.

Snapdragon power

The metal body has a fingerprint sensor on the rear, and the design looks clean and sleek in the pictures. Having spent time with the Xiaomi Mi 5 Pro earlier this year and being impressed with the build quality, materials, and style, we’d have expected nothing less. In the top rear corner is a 16-megapixel camera, and around the front is a 5-megapixel camera with an  85-degree field of view for group selfies.

Qualcomm has supplied the processor, which will be either the hexa-core Snapdragon 650 or the octa-core Snapdragon 652. Both processors are almost identical in every other respect, outside of the number of cores. There are three versions of the Mi Max. The basic model comes with 3GB RAM, 32GB of memory, and the Snapdragon 650, while the Snapdragon 652 is inside a 64GB version with 3GB RAM, and a 128GB model with 4GB RAM. There’s obviously plenty of room inside the Mi Max, because a large 4,580mAh battery has been squeezed into them all.

Prices range from the equivalent of $230 to $300 in China, and other features include a dual SIM slot, 4G connectivity, and an infrared blaster. The phone will support the next version of Xiaomi’s own Android build, called MIUI 8, which includes a new power saving mode, video editing features, and security enhancements.

Starting July 13, the Mi Max will be available for purchase in India, with Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal, Paytm, and Xiaomi’s own website now taking registration sign-ups. When the phone goes on sale, there will be two variants — the base model with 3GB RAM, Snapdragon 650, and 32GB of storage will go for 15,000 rupees, or $222, while the model with 4GB RAM, Snapdragon 652, and 128GB of storage will go for 20,000 rupees, or $296. Xiaomi will hold a flash sale on its website for Indian residents on July 6.

Xiaomi bets the Mi 11 is big and powerful enough to take on the Galaxy S21
xiaomi mi 11 news colors front and back

If the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra just isn’t the phone for you, then Xiaomi has launched what looks to be a worthy alternative, the Mi 11. It takes on the latest Samsung flagship with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, a 108-megapixel camera, and a 6.81-inch AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and a WQHD+ resolution. Although the price has not been confirmed yet, Xiaomi’s smartphones are usually reasonably priced, so expect it to come in slightly cheaper than the $1,200 Galaxy S21 Ultra.

Let’s look at the hardware in more detail. The 108MP main camera is the standout feature, but it’s not clear exactly which sensor it uses. The Galaxy S21 Ultra uses Samsung’s latest ISOCELL HM3 sensor. We do know the Xiaomi’s main camera has a 1/1.33 sensor size and 0.8nm pixels. It’s joined by a 13MP ultra-wide camera and a 5MP telemacro camera, although it hasn’t stated what optical zoom it provides, if any.

Apple isn’t making a foldable iPhone anytime soon, so don’t get your hopes up
samsung galaxy z fold 2 release news fold2 open sides

The foldable iPhone is coming! That's according to a new Digitimes report, at least. The supply chain-monitoring publication is following the considerable ramp up of production in flexible OLED displays, noting that Samsung Display is aiming to produce 900,000 such panels per month -- and even more in the future. The leap in logic then is that this increase in demand will only grow as Digitimes feels Apple is set to enter the foldable phone market in ... 2022:

"Digitimes Research believes that Apple will likely step into the foldable smartphone sector in 2022, furthering demand for flexible OLED displays," the report states.

2020 showed us you don’t need to spend $1,000 to get a great phone
iPhone 12 mini in hand

Flagship phone prices have skyrocketed over the past few years. While 2016's iPhone 7 started at $649, the next year's iPhone X brought the price of a flagship phone to $999, a price point that has remained in the iPhone lineup since. Other companies have followed suit, with the Samsung Galaxy S20 and Note 20 both costing $999, and more expensive models available, too.

But if there's anything we learned in 2020, it's that you don't have to spend that much cash to get a flagship-level experience. In fact, if you can swing a solid $700 or $750, you'll get a near-identical experience to a $1,000 phone, no matter what kind of phone you prefer.
The best iPhone 12 is also the 'worst' iPhone 12
The iPhone 12 series has received excellent reviews, but the reasons they're getting such good reviews are present on all iPhone 12 models. That's to say, you can get the best new iPhone features on the $699 iPhone 12 Mini and the $1,099+ iPhone 12 Pro Max. Beautiful OLED display? Check. Great cameras? Absolutely. 5G support (though who cares, really)? Yep. That awesome new squared-off design that breathes new life into the iPhone series for the first time since the iPhone X? Present.
