This Xiaomi phone concept is an engineering marvel — but do we want it?

Xiaomi has a vision for the future of smartphones, and it involves a whole lot of screen. The company is showing off its latest concept device, and it’s a phone with a portless design and a display that curves around all four of the edges of the device.

The concept, called the Xiaomi Quad-Curved Waterfall Display Concept, involves the use of what Xiaomi says is a “revolutionary hyper quad-curved 88-degree surface,” and it was apparently not so easy to make. According to the company, the glass was built by hot-bending glass at an 800-degree temperature, and required the use of four different polishing tools, and up to 10 polishing procedures.

Now, while building this display clearly involves some pretty incredible engineering, there is some question as to whether or not people actually want a phone like this. Curved display phones are actually kind of on their way out. They’re starting to look a little dated, plus they’re easy to accidentally press — and on a device with a display on all four sides, it’s hard to imagine that not being an issue.

The other big difference between this phone and other phones on the market is the portless design. Not only does it do away with the USB-C port, but it also boasts under-display cameras, eSIM chips, pressure-sensitive touch sensors, and a so-called “flexible film display acoustic technology” for the built-in speakers.

Companies have been moving in this direction for a few years now, and it’s even expected that in the next few years, Apple will finally ditch the Lightning port — for a fully portless phone. A portless phone could make for better water resistance, and would require the use of wireless charging, since it can’t charge by being plugged in.

Xiaomi itself recently made some announcements around remote wireless charging. Called “Air Charge,” the new tech can apparently charge multiple devices at a time, and works within a radius of several meters. Devices can be charged at speeds of up to 5W, which isn’t all that fast, but given the fact that you could potentially keep using your device normally while charging it, that seems like a fair trade-off. Xiaomi also says that this tech will work with watches and fitness bracelets, and could make living rooms “truly wireless.” Of course, several companies, including the likes of Energous, have been working on tech like this for years, and it has yet to really see the light of day, so we’ll have to wait and see if it can gain any traction.

Every smartphone maker these days is competing in the increasingly intense camera megapixel race, but there are a few like Xiaomi and Sony that are bumping the sensor size for more meaningful image quality gains. Xiaomi hit the target with its 12S Ultra flagship, a phone that comes fitted with a 1-inch camera sensor. Now it's debuted a sibling with even more outrageous camera capabilities -- but you'll pay quite a bit for the privilege. 
Xiaomi has today detailed the 12S Ultra Concept, which looks almost identical to the flagship version that is currently on the shelves. However, the Concept version comes equipped with not one, but two 1-inch camera sensors.

To fit those sensors inside the phone. Xiaomi had to sacrifice the periscope-style telephoto zoom camera. The second sensor that Xiaomi fitted inside the 12S Ultra concept looks just like a dedicated camera’s sensor assembly. 
The company’s engineers got rid of the lens assembly in front of the 1-inch sensor, and instead covered the whole set at the top with a huge piece of sapphire glass to protect it from scratches and dust. Xiaomi claims that despite the heavy modifications, the Concept model still retains its IP68-certified resistance against the elements. 

Right above the center-mounted 1-inch sensor is a metallic ring that relies on a twist-and-click system to fit Leica’s M-series camera lenses. Xiaomi’s official presentation video shared on video shows the phone attached to a variety of Leica’s professional M-series lens kits.
The idea here is the secondary 1-inch camera sensor with its own lens assembly will deliver great results when using the device as a regular phone. However, when you need those granular photography controls and advanced portrait effects, just mount a Leica lens and you’re good to go.

Xiaomi’s new phone has a 200MP camera — and its photos are stunning

There was a time when phones with 48-megapixel cameras sounded impressive, and when some of our favorite camera phones still “only” have 12 megapixels today. But for the new 12T Pro, Xiaomi has decided 12, 48, or even 108 megapixels isn’t the headline number it wants — and has therefore used Samsung’s ISOCELL HP1 200-megapixel camera instead.

Samsung announced the ISOCELL HP1 sensor in 2021, and the Xiaomi 12T Pro is the first phone to use it. There’s also plenty of speculation it may also be a major feature on the future Galaxy S23 smartphone range. Until now, we’ve only seen a massive photo of a cat teasing the camera’s ability, so what’s it like in real life?

Before we talk about the photos, you need to know the size of the 200MP photos taken by the Xiaomi 12T Pro. Yes, it is possible to shoot in maximum resolution, but by default, the camera takes 12MP photos using 4-into-1 pixel binning technology. Beware, though — the 200MP mode photos are massive. We’re talking 16,384 pixels by 12,288 pixels and, on average, about 55MB each. Tap the shutter button, and there is a slight pause while the photo is processed, but it’s not all that different from using the regular camera mode. The 200MP photos I’ve taken have a lovely balance, with vibrant colors and great exposure, and are sometimes even better looking than the equivalent 12MP photos taken by the phone.

This includes recommendations of apps for non-phone devices, a search filter to focus on only games optimized for non-phone devices, and even a remote install feature that will let you deliver those apps to your Android TV, Wear OS watch, or Android Automotive-equipped car.
