YouTube in-app messaging coming to iOS and Android

YouTube is testing a messaging feature on its apps that will let you chat and share videos with friends without ever having to use another platform.

The service is currently being rolled out to a small group of users, with the hopes that word-of-mouth will see it reach more people. The lucky few that receive the messaging feature will be able to invite their friends to chat, simply by adding them to a conversation thread, which will be housed within a new tab.

YouTube is hoping the new feature will encourage people to share more videos from within its mobile apps, reports Wired. A general launch date has not yet been confirmed.

Ultimately, this is YouTube’s major bid to capitalize on the collective experience that comes with group, and one-on-one, interactions. It already has the biggest video service on the web (over 1 billion users and counting), with mobile viewing figures also boasting more engagement than its rivals (an average daily watching session on a smartphone lasts 40 minutes). Therefore, it’s a surprise that the feature wasn’t introduced sooner.

Despite laying waste to the competition, Google will nonetheless be watching its rivals closely. First Facebook, and now Snapchat, have clocked up massive video viewing figures. Meanwhile, a new challenger to the throne has arrived in the form of Amazon, which yesterday launched its Video Direct service for user-created content.

At present, the only option to share video on YouTube is via email or through other social networks, including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and the remaining usual suspects. A successful messaging feature would bypass the need to post content sourced from YouTube elsewhere, keeping people glued to its apps as a result. YouTube is already home to popular trailers, viral clips, and its superstar creators. Soon, it could also be home to all your friends too.

YouTube Stories are going away starting June 26

YouTube today announced that it's going to kill off its Story feature — like the similarly named Instagram Stories, basically its answer to Snapchat — starting June 26. That's the last day you'll be able to post a new YouTube Story. And seven days after that, any story that already was live will die an unceremonious death.

That doesn't mean there won't be an alternative to a full-blown YouTube video or a smaller YouTube Short. (Which is, in and of itself, YouTube's answer to Tiktok.) YouTube is pointing creators to "YouTube Community posts" instead, which it says "are a great choice if you want to share lightweight updates, start conversations, or promote your YouTube content to your audience." Community posts essentially are ephemeral updates that also allow for text, polls, quizzes, filters, and stickers.  It added that "amongst creators who use both posts and Stories, posts on average drive many times more comments and likes compared to Stories."

Being popular is about the only thing the current most-viewed YouTube videos have in common with their top-performing predecessors. Even though YouTube videos like Chocolate Rain went viral during the first few years of YouTube's content, they probably wouldn't be among the kinds of videos that go viral on the platform now.

In fact, children's programming and music videos are now among the most-viewed content on YouTube. Music videos, in particular, have enjoyed great success on the streaming site and, until recently, had been the majority of the most-viewed videos in YouTube's history. Music videos still account for 40% of the top 10 most-viewed videos, however. The other 60% is content for young children. If these view counts are anything to go by, the video-sharing site could be considered a leading platform for music videos and kid-friendly content, rather than just the memeworthy viral videos the site was known for in its early days.

YouTube TV details fixes for audio sync, better 1080p quality

YouTube TV — the most popular live-streaming service service in the U.S. with more than 5 million subscribers — this week gave an update on Reddit on some bug squashing and upcoming features, plus some welcome improvements. It's an interesting bit of transparency in an age in which app changelogs are all but useless.

Probably the most interesting is that YouTube TV is "testing transcoding changes, including a bit rate increase for live 1080p content." Resolution — that's the 1080p number — is just one part of what makes up the quality of the picture on your screen. Bit rate is another. Basically it refers to the amount of data being pushed to make up that resolution — like the difference between a 1,080-piece puzzle with a picture made up of five colors, or one made up of 500 colors. Think of it like that. The higher the bit rate, the better the picture. And as we've discussed before, we'll take a 1080p stream with a higher bit rate over a bad 4K stream any day of the week, particularly when it comes to sports (which is exactly what we've seen with Apple's excellent MLS streams).
