Casting for the upcoming 24: Legacy spinoff series seems to be happening at a rapid-fire pace these days, with both of the show’s stars confirmed this week.
Following the announcement of Straight Outta Compton star Corey Hawkins joining the series just a few days ago, The Lord of the Rings and Homeland actress Miranda Otto has now reportedly agreed to co-star in the project. Otto is expected to play the former director of the government’s Counter Terrorist Unit — the agency that Kiefer Sutherland’s Jack Bauer operated within throughout most of the original series.
As reported by Variety, Otto’s character will begin to question her decision to leave CTU behind after marrying a senator, and will likely be drawn back into the high-stakes world of terrorism prevention.
Earlier this week, Hawkins was cast as Eric Carter, a former Army Ranger and military hero whose life is upended when he encounters information about a potential terror attack on American soil that’s connected to events from his past. His path crosses with that of Otto’s character when he goes to CTU for help.
Sutherland isn’t expected to reprise his role for the spinoff series, but will serve as one of the show’s executive producers. He’ll be joined by original 24 producers Howard Gordon, Manny Coto, Evan Katz, and Brian Grazer.
At this point, FOX has only ordered a pilot episode for 24: Legacy, and has yet to make a full-season order for the series. However, the report on Otto’s casting also suggests that the network will indeed order a full, 13-episode season once the pilot is produced.
The original 24 earned 73 Primetime Emmy nominations over the course of its eight-season run, which began in 2001 and ended in 2010, and was followed by the 12-episode miniseries 24: Live Another Day in 2014. Sutherland received a total of seven Emmy nominations for portraying Jack Bauer, and won the Emmy in 2006 after the series’ fifth season.
