What’s so satisfying about rom-coms is that you always know what you’re going to get. Two people meet and eventually fall in love. But the story to get there is what makes each one unique, even if it’s totally proedictable. They’re the types of movies you can put on when you just want something comforting to soothe your soul like a hot bowl of soup or a pint of Rocky Road ice cream.
There are three rom-coms on Amazon Prime Video you need to watch in October, all of which are actually quite different from one another. They do share some commonality, however, in that each one focuses on a story of romance that stems from or leads to a comedic situation. Most important, they all tell a compelling story to keep you hooked from start to finish.

About Fate (2022)
About Fate is a remake of the 1976 Soviet TV movie The Irony of Fate with a modern twist. Through a series of mishaps, Griffin (Thomas Mann) accidentally and drunkenly ends up at the home of a random woman named Margot (Emma Roberts) after using a key under the flowerpot to get inside. The home looks almost identical to his, so in his exhausted, drunken state, he’s convinced he’s in his own house. When Margot arrives home, she shockingly finds a stranger in her bed.
Making things worse, her boyfrien,d Kip (Lewis Tan), shows up at just the wrong time. Dumped and left without a date for her sister’s wedding, Margot begs Griffin to make it up to her by pretending to be her boyfriend for the event so she doesn’t have to go alone.
You can guess where things go from there as the story makes you ponder if fate truly is real. The movie has received decent reviews, with AV Club’s Luke Y. Thompson calling About Fate “surprisingly charming.”

10 Years (2011)
Did you know there’s a rom-com from 2011 with a massive ensemble cast that includes Channing Tatum, Justin Long, Kata Mara, Rosario Dawson, Oscar Isaac, Chris Pratt, Aubrey Plaza (Agatha All Along), Anthony Mackie, and the list goes on? It’s called 10 Years and it follows a group of friends gathering for their 10-year high school reunion. A movie about reliving your youth, accepting the realities of life, and rekindling flames, 10 Years will have you feeling all nostalgic about your own glory days.
The movie is cute, fun, and relatable, following adults drawn to their pasts, reflecting on their younger days, and coming to terms with the issues they face in life now. Nothing ever turns out how you want it, nor is everything ever perfect. But second chances sometimes come around. Andrea Chase of Killer Movie Reviews describes 10 Years as possessing a “pleasing mix of belly laughs and gentle sighs.”

Step Dad (2023)
Philip (Kenny Gardner) has long been a bachelor, but when he meets and falls in love with Sharon (Porsha Bunch Hall), his heart skips a beat. A secret from her past, however, boils to the surface and his feelings are put to the test. Philips turns to his friends, JB (Kris Gardner) and Blake (BJ Cramer), in hopes that they can provide counsel and help him through this challenging situation that involves kids he didn’t realize would be part of her package deal.
Step Dad promotes themes of forgiveness, self-awareness, and the real meaning of what it is to love someone. There are comedic moments to break up the intensity, particularly among Philip and his best buds and in his attempts to bond, or at least put up with, with Sharon’s teenage kids. Step Dad is one of those fly-under-the-radar movies, but it has a solid 8.2 IMDb rating and an uplifting premise that will get you in a good mood.
