AMC greenlights pilot for a not-spinoff to The Walking Dead

AMC is down one massive hit series with the end of Breaking Bad and it’s about to lose another with the 2015 conclusion to Mad Men slowly creeping up. The network has shown no fear of mining its popular content for new creative outlets (see also: Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul), and now it’s turning that approach to yet another mainstream series: The Walking Dead. Just don’t call it a spinoff.

The network has apparently greenlit what EW calls a “companion series” to the show based on Robert Kirkman’s comic books. The as-yet-untitled new project is set in the same zombie apocalyptic universe as The Walking Dead, but it features an entirely new cast of characters and occurs in a completely different set of locations. It’s not a spinoff because none of the current show’s characters are pegged to appear in the new one.

Development of the companion series is in the hands of The Walking Dead executive producers Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert, and Kirkman. Sons of Anarchy producer Dave Erickson was hired as the showrunner back in March 2014, and he developed a pilot script with Kirkman that was submitted only recently, and saw a positive reception.

“There are many corners of The Walking Dead universe that remain unseen in the shadows,” Kirkman said. “Being given the opportunity to shine a light into those corners and see what lurks out there is an absolute thrill. I know the fans are anxious to hear what Dave and I have been cooking up for this new universe of The Walking Dead, and I’m happy to be one step closer to sharing it with them.”

This is hardly the first time The Walking Dead universe has developed outside the comics. AMC’s hit series amounts to a re-engineered retelling of the basic narrative from Kirkman’s books, and Telltale Games’ critically acclaimed video game series tells a story set in the universe of the books, but with a different set of characters as its focus.

The Walking Dead returns to AMC for its fifth season on October 12.

AMC lines up a new Walking Dead spinoff for Negan and Maggie

The Walking Dead will come to an end after 11 seasons later this year. However, two of the primary leads will live on. AMC has announced a new Walking Dead spinoff, The Walking Dead: Isle of the Dead, with Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan reprising their respective roles as Negan and Maggie.

However, Maggie and Negan don't exactly have a close relationship on the show. Warning, spoilers follow: The first time they met, Negan murdered Maggie's husband, Glenn. In recent seasons, Negan has reformed and aligned himself with the survivors at Alexandria. Naturally, Maggie has never forgiven Negan, but they have been able to work together on occasion. In Isle of the Dead, the unlikely duo will go someplace where TWD hasn't explored before: New York City.

Never has a show jumped a proverbial shark only to land ever so steadily and tread water for a few seasons, then rise above once again like The Walking Dead. If you're one of the viewers who stuck with the show through its lowest points, you will have reaped the benefits of the big pay-off that came after the post-apocalyptic series hit its stride once again.

The Walking Dead's earliest seasons drew viewers into emotional, heart-wrenching scenes, shocking them with copious amounts of action and gore, and built characters who fans became deeply invested in as the story arcs developed. Following some questionable middle seasons, the show returned to its initial appeal thanks to reinvigorated elements that made it fresh and exciting once again.

Tales of the Walking Dead enlists Terry Crews and others

AMC's The Walking Dead is wrapping up with its final season later this year, but zombies will never die! One of the next iterations of the franchise is the upcoming anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead. And the new show has added some very familiar faces to the cast.

Via Deadline, Terry Crews, Parker Posey, Anthony Edwards, Poppy Liu, and Jillian Bell have been lined up to appear in Tales of the Walking Dead season 1. Crews recently costarred in Brooklyn Nine-Nine for eight seasons, in addition to his roles in The Expendables films and hosting America's Got Talent. Posey's credits include Lost in Space and the upcoming HBO Max miniseries The Staircase. Edwards was one of the original stars of ER, and he has supporting roles in the upcoming limited series WeCrashed and Inventing Anna. Liu had a leading role in the sitcom Sunnyside and guest appearances on Better Call Saul and iCarly. Bell has headlined the film Brittney Runs a Marathon and the comedy series Godmothered.
