Even Ant-Man wants to call The Avengers in the movie’s latest trailer

Marvel's Ant-Man - Trailer 2 | HD
In the Marvel Comics universe, Ant-Man was a founding member of The Avengers. In Marvel’s cinematic universe, however, Ant-Man is a fledgling hero whose first instinct when faced with a major threat is, well… to call The Avengers instead of him.

Marvel Studios’ upcoming Ant-Man movie is already looking like a significant departure from much of the studio’s cinematic universe, but the latest trailer for the film offers further evidence that Paul Rudd’s size-changing superhero is going to be a very different kind of protagonist. And thankfully, when The Avengers aren’t available, he appears more than capable of taking on a challenge or two himself (otherwise Ant-Man would be a pretty boring movie).

The new trailer for Ant-Man puts quite a bit of focus on Rudd in costume as Ant-Man, providing a nice balance of humor and superhero action that not only showcases the stunts his character can pull off with his high-tech suit, but also the sort of lighthearted tone one might expect from a film scripted by comedy-friendly screenwriters Edgar Wright, Joe Cornish, Paul Rudd, and Adam McKay.

The trailer’s debut comes hot on the heels of another promotional video for Ant-Man that arrived online this week. In a faux television news report from “WHIH World News,” actress Leslie Bibb reprises her Iron Man and Iron Man 2 role as reporter Christine Everhart. The clip gives us a special preview of the fictional network’s coverage of the destructive aftermath of the events in Avengers: Age of Ultron, as well as a story on recently released criminal Scott Lang, Rudd’s character in Ant-Man. (You can watch the video below.)

A Twitter account for the WHIH World News also teases that an “exclusive story on Scott Lang” will air July 7, hinting that Marvel Studios has something big coming next week.

Along with Rudd, the cast of Ant-Man includes Michael Douglas (Wall StreetThe Game), Evangeline Lilly (Lost, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies), Corey Stoll (The Strain, House of Cards), Judy Greer (Archer, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Martin Donovan (Inherent Vice, Insomnia), and Wood Harris (Dredd, Remember the Titans). The film is directed by Bring It On and Yes Man filmmaker Peyton Reed, and serves as the concluding installment of “Phase Two” of Marvel’s cinematic universe.

Ant-Man hits theaters July 17.

The poster for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

Ant-Man is tired of being the comic relief. After playing a surprisingly pivotal role in Avengers: Endgame, he's back in his own high-stakes adventure to take on Kang, the time-traveling super villain from the Loki TV series, who seems to be at the center of the next phase of Marvel movies and shows. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania sees Scott Lang's whole family travel to the quantum realm, a trippy, sub-atomic, CGI-heavy dimension.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is one of the newest Marvel films. Only Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 is newer. Disney has just released the movie for streaming online, with almost no strings attached. All you need is a Disney+ subscription. Should Edgar Wright finally join the MCU and direct Ant-Man 4?
Hope and Scott share a moment in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

There's no way to sugarcoat it: Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was not good. The film was a critical and commercial disappointment, continuing the MCU's current trend to deliver subpar efforts that further complicate the already shaky and convoluted Multiverse Saga. Quantumania had all the elements to succeed: Paul Rudd's charm, a thrilling premise -- on paper, anyway --, an interesting villain, Michelle Pfeiffer. Alas, the film wasted all this potential, offering a weird and confused story with awful CGI, absurd characters, and no real stakes, despite what its monologuing villain claimed.

Who's to blame for Quantumania's mediocrity? Screenwriter Jeff Loveness bears much of the blame, penning a weak story that squandered one of the MCU's most personable heroes and introduced the Multiverse Saga's Big Bad with a fizzle rather than a bang. However, I'd say director Peyton Reed is the true culprit here, especially because, after two movies, Reed should know better and have more control over these characters. The first two Ant-Man movies were nothing great, but they weren't this bad, right? Perhaps they were; we just were in such an MCU high that we either didn't notice or gave them a pass.

The 10 most popular movies of 2023
Mario and Luigi raise their fists together in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

It's near the end of April and Hollywood has already made more money at this point of the year than in 2022. The last couple of months has brought moviegoers sequels to such popular franchises as John Wick, Creed, and Scream. And just this past weekend, a new horror movie, Evil Dead Rise, opened to critical acclaim, with audiences flocking to see the latest entry in the Sam Raimi-created horror franchise.

How well did they do? And what other movies have succeeded at the box office in 2023? Marvel and DC are represented by the third Ant-Man film and the second Shazam film, respectively. Legacy sequels about a boxer, a monosyllabic assassin, and a masked murderer garnered huge financial returns. Plus, a bear on cocaine managed to take a bite out of the box office. And a certain brotherly duo of Brooklyn's finest plumbers has won over audiences with their Bowser-beating antics. Below are the top 10 most popular movies of 2023 -- so far -- based on their domestic box-office earnings.
