Apple unexpectedly puts the brakes on its ‘Carpool Karaoke’ launch

Apple Music — Carpool Karaoke: The Series — Coming Soon
Apple’s Carpool Karaoke show for its music streaming service looks to be stuck in the parking lot, at least for the time being.

The tech giant has reportedly delayed the launch of the show, a spinoff of the segment made famous by James Corden on The Late Late Show where the host drives A-list celebrities around while singing their hearts out to famous tracks.

The debut episode was was meant to hit Apple Music this month, but has been pushed to “later this year,” a spokesperson for the Cupertino-based company told Reuters on Monday. Indications of issues with the show first surfaced in March when Apple suddenly postponed a premiere party without saying why. The event was rescheduled for Monday, but then postponed again.

The road map for Apple’s version of Carpool Karaoke seemed all set as recently as February when the company released a 60-second teaser (above) promising big-name celebrities and “surprises every week.” But the only surprise at the current time is that it won’t release within the originally expected time frame.

We can see from the trailer that Apple already has plenty of segments in the can, so it’s unclear why it’s made the decision to push the launch to later in the year.

Spotify’s Traffic Jam

News of Apple’s Carpool Karaoke rescheduling comes a month after rival Spotify announced its own take on the show. Traffic Jam debuted on the music streaming service a few weeks back and pairs a rapper and a producer — in a car — who have to “create an original song while stuck in LA traffic.” They then have to perform it live to fans just a few hours later.

Apple Music launched nearly two years ago and reached 20 million paying subscribers toward the end of 2016, while Spotify revealed in March that it now has 50 million paying subscribers.

Both charge users $10 a month for access to their huge libraries of music and offer identical deals for students ($5 a month) and families ($15 a month). But while Spotify offers a free tier with ads and several limitations, Apple Music has no free offering at the current time.

Apple’s WWDC is coming June 6, MacBook Air launch possible
Tim Cook Apple Event 2021

Apple has just announced the dates for its upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which will run from Monday, June 6 to Friday, June 10, 2022. The event will be almost entirely online, as has been the case in the last few years due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

We say "almost" because it appears Apple will be hosting a small in-person event at Apple Park during WWDC week. According to the company’s press release, “Apple will host a special day for developers and students at Apple Park on June 6 to watch the keynote and State of the Union videos together.” That marks the first time WWDC has had any sort of in-person element since 2019.

Apple TV+’s Roar trailer introduces its dark feminist fables
Nicole Kidman looking shocked in Roar.

In the early '70s, singer Helen Reddy's "I Am Woman" became an iconic feminist song, thanks in part to its fearless challenge: "I am woman, hear me roar." However, we suspect that Reddy wasn't expecting that "roar" to take the form that it does in Apple TV+'s new show called Roar. Apple TV+ describes Roar as "an anthology series of darkly comic feminist fables. Spanning genres from magical realism to psychological horror, these eight stand-alone stories feature ordinary women in some pretty extraordinary circumstances." But if you were expecting The Twilight Zone's sci-fi morality tales, then you've come to the wrong place. Roar has its own flavor.

Nicole Kidman is executive producing Roar and also starring in one of the episodes. In the footage, Kidman's character can't seem to satisfy her voracious appetite for photographs. That's not a euphemism. She literally eats photographs. The trailer doesn't explain why she eats pictures, but it's probably not for the taste. The trailer also lays out the premises of the remaining seven episodes as well.

Apple is not ready to launch its AR/VR headset yet
Apple VR Headset Concept by Antonio De Rosa

On the morning of March 8, Apple CEO Tim Cook will take the stage before a global audience watching virtually for news of the tech giant's next product reveals and upgrades. Since Apple titled the event "Peek Performance," the cult of Apple immediately assumed there was something special about this everything iOS party. Most members settled on a single prediction: Apple will finally unveil its long-rumored AR/VR headset. I'm not so sure.

It's not an unreasonable suggestion, as the logo for the event on Apple's own page does include an AR logo within the multicolor image. A quick Google perusal of the host images for past events reveals similar AR logos popped up for previous events that had nothing to do with any new Apple VR technology, as others have also noticed.
