The most expensive Christmas movie of all-time was a massive box office flop and hasn’t exactly earned rave reviews. Red One is PG-13, so we almost didn’t include it on this list, but as the biggest Christmas movie ever, it feels like it gets some special consideration.

After Santa Claus (code name: Red One) is kidnapped by anti-Christmas villains, Callum Drift (Dwayne Johnson), head of the North Pole’s E.L.F. security force, jumps into action. But first, he needs to find where Santa has been taken. To do that, he enlists the help of world-famous tracker and Santa skeptic, Jack O’Malley (Chris Evans). Traveling across the world and facing down abominable snowmen, the unlikely pair must overcome their differences to save Christmas.

This is far from your grandfather’s Pinocchio – the PG-13 remake is beautiful, dramatic, and thoroughly enchanting for older kids and parents who are looking for a movie that the whole family can sit down and enjoy. The classic and familiar beats are here, from the wooden boy trying to become real and a growing nose, but there are also a lot of new story elements to appreciate (some derived from the original 1883 book and excellent performances. Fun fact: Most of the special effects are made with prosthetic makeup instead of CGI!

Best new movies coming to theaters in 2024
best new movies coming to theaters sonic the hedgehog 3 movie hero

With this week's update, this roundup of the best new movies coming to theaters in 2024 comes to an end. The year's almost over! More importantly, there will be no major releases after December 25. However, four contenders on Christmas Day will attempt to stake out a place for themselves. We'd like to see Nosferatu do well, as it looks like a stylish horror film that's well-suited to be counterprogramming for everything else. But the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, has Oscar bait written all over it. The other two Christmas options are the erotic thriller Babygirl and the sports drama The Fire Inside.

Before we get to the Christmas box office, we'll have to see if Sonic the Hedgehog 3 or Mufasa: The Lion King can put a dent in the one-two-three punch of Moana 2, Wicked, and Gladiator II this weekend. Right now, the early projections have Sonic 3 taking in $60 million this weekend, well ahead of everything else.
