The beloved fantasy tale comes to life with Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth mastery — albeit with some Hollywood story liberties. The basics of the classic novella remain the same, however, as Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) is recruited away from the idyllic, yet dull, bliss of Shire life by Gandalf the Grey (Sir Ian McKellen) to join a group of 13 dwarves on an epic quest. To help the dwarves reclaim their mountain home, the party will have to face down the dragon Smaug.

This is far from your grandfather’s Pinocchio – the PG-13 remake is beautiful, dramatic, and thoroughly enchanting for older kids and parents who are looking for a movie that the whole family can sit down and enjoy. The classic and familiar beats are here, from the wooden boy trying to become real and a growing nose, but there are also a lot of new story elements to appreciate (some derived from the original 1883 book and excellent performances. Fun fact: Most of the special effects are made with prosthetic makeup instead of CGI!

Venom smiles toothily in a still image from the movie "Venom: The Last Dance."

Do you remember those few glorious weeks when superhero fatigue was a thing of the past thanks to Deadpool & Wolverine? I figured we had at least until Kraven the Hunter's inevitable flop before that would come up again. But then Joker: Folie à Deux became an even bigger flop than The Marvels, and we're right back where we started.

That brings us to this week, with Venom: The Last Dance poised to be the last successful comic book movie of the year. How successful remains to be seen. Current box-office projections have it hitting $65 million this weekend, which is well below the $90 million that Venom: Let There Be Carnage earned in 2021. There are definitely diminishing returns with this franchise, barring some unforeseen surge this weekend.
