Sony Pictures Television and AMC confirmed the renewal of the series this week, with showrunners Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould sticking around to bring audiences more adventures with Bob Odenkirk’s small-time lawyer James “Jimmy” McGill and the increasingly complicated predicaments he finds himself in while operating on the shady side of justice. The second season of the series is currently underway.
“What Vince, Peter, Bob and the entire team have accomplished with Better Call Saul is truly rare and remarkable,” said Charlie Collier, president of AMC, SundanceTV, and AMC Studios, in a statement accompanying the renewal announcement.
“They have taken one of the most iconic, immersive and fan-obsessive (in the best possible way) shows in television history and created a prequel that stands on its own. Watching Jimmy McGill’s thoughtful, melodic, and morally flexible transformation into Saul Goodman is entertaining and delighting millions of fans, whether their starting point was Breaking Bad or not. This series has its own feel, pace and sensibility and we can’t wait to see what this incredibly talented group comes up with next in season three.”
The recipient of seven Primetime Emmy Award nominations after its first season, Better Call Saul is set six years prior to the events of Breaking Bad. The series also earned multiple Screen Actors Guild Award and Golden Globe Award nominations, with many of the awards honoring series star Odenkirk.
“It’s been an extraordinary show that lives up to its predecessor,” added Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, presidents of programming and production for Sony Pictures Television, in the announcement. “Vince, Peter, Bob and the team are delivering brilliant storytelling and we’re proud to have AMC as our partner for another well-earned season.”
With the second season of the series wrapping up in April, the third season is expected to premiere in early 2017.
