Science and fun an explosive combination in Bill Nye's new Netflix series

Bill Nye Saves The World | Trailer [HD] | Netflix
Netflix confirmed last summer that Bill Nye, the self-proclaimed “science guy,” would be returning to the small screen in a new series. And today, we finally got an official launch date for the show, entitled Bill Nye Saves the World, as well as a glimpse into what it will entail through the first-released trailer.

Bill Nye Saves the World will debut on Netflix on Friday, April 21, and will aim to explore hot science topics that are impacting society today, including politics and pop culture. The fun trailer shows that Nye will explore areas like sex, global warming, GMOs, technology, and even alternative medicine.

In addition to several correspondents that will assist Nye throughout the talk show, including model and avid programmer Karlie Kloss and Derek Muller, creator of the science educational YouTube channel Veritasium, the show will also feature a number of special guests who are bound to have some appeal to Nye’s fan base, including Steve Aoki, Will Wheaton, Zach Braff, Rachel Bloom, and Joel McHale, among others. The clips suggest they’ll be helping with some crazy science experiments.

, which ran in the ‘90s, became popular both for its interesting educational components as well as Nye’s ability to be thoroughly entertaining. That’s not surprising since, in addition to being a science educator and mechanical engineer, Nye had also previously gotten his start in entertainment working as a writer/actor on a sketch comedy TV show, Almost Live!

Since Bill Nye went off the air, Nye has continued his passion for science, currently serving as the CEO of The Planetary Society. He’s also made a number of TV appearances, talking on various science topics, as well as showcasing some dance moves on the last season of Dancing With the Stars.

This new Netflix series will look at topics from a scientific point of view, dispel myths, and refute some anti-scientific claims that “may be espoused by politicians, religious leaders, or titans of the industry,” reads the official Netflix synopsis.

“We’ll do our best to enlighten and entertain our audience,” says Nye, “and perhaps we’ll change the world a little.”

Bill Nye’s Lightsail 2 is ready to surf through space on solar winds
solar sail is deployed 20170724 ls 2 earth 1500x1000

Like some kind of space-bound sailing vessel, LightSail 2, a crowdfunded spacecraft launched by the Planetary Society, Bill Nye the Science Guy’s nonprofit organization, has unfurled its solar sail in space. In doing so, it demonstrates the feasibility of so-called “solar sailing,” in which a spacecraft orbits the Earth using sunlight as its primary fuel source. In the process, it promises one way to help make space travel cheaper than it has been previously. It also means zero risk of running out of fuel, so long as it is able to harness sunlight to travel.

“Solar sailing is in its infancy, but it may become a game-changer,” Nye told Digital Trends in a recent interview. “We’ll soon be able to send our solar sail spacecraft to all sorts of destinations in our solar system, and perhaps to another star system one day.”

Track Bill Nye’s LightSail 2 solar spaceship in real time as it makes history
awesome tech you cant buy yet may 17 2015

The LightSail 2 solar-powered spacecraft is officially operational -- it's now in orbit and made its first contact with Earth on Tuesday. You'll now be able to track the ship live using an online dashboard.
The LightSail 2 is the result of a $1 million Kickstarter campaign organized and led by Bill Nye’s non-profit Planetary Society. In an interview with Digital Trends before the ship's June launch, Nye said that the main objective of the mission is to get the spacecraft to orbit around the Earth using sunlight as its fuel source, demonstrating the viability of "solar sailing."
The idea is that if the LightSail 2 is successful, the technology could help make it possible to traveler further and deeper into space at a lower cost than is possible today.
The Planetary Society launched a similar spacecraft in 2015, which proved the solar sailing concept could work. That vessel took some pictures of its surroundings but remained at a low enough altitude that it was subject to atmospheric drag. The LightSail 2 is capable of going higher into orbit than its predecessor, reducing that drag.
The LightSail 2 hitched a ride into space last week aboard Space X’s Falcon Heavy rocket. As planned, it delivered its first signals back to mission control at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California on Tuesday.  Those first signals included health and status data as well as a Morse code beacon indicating the vessel’s call sign.
If you want to keep track of the spacecraft, the Planetary Society has also launched a new mission control dashboard for the vessel. With it, anyone can access the most up-to-date information about the spacecraft during its journey including information about how long the LightSail 2 has been on its mission, what the temperature is inside the spacecraft, and whether or not its solar sail is deployed. The dashboard will also allow you to find the vessel’s current location and find out if it will be passing overhead.
“The Georgia Tech Prox-1 spacecraft did its job perfectly, delivering LightSail 2 to the desired orbit for solar sailing,” LightSail 2 project manager Dave Spencer said in a statement.  “Receiving the initial radio signal from LightSail 2 is an important milestone, and the flight team is excited to begin mission operations.”
The LightSail 2 is expected to remain in orbit for roughly the next year.
