Black Adam faces a dire choice in the new trailer

The DC Extended Universe has never needed a Superman more than it does now. What it’s gotten is Black Adam. Dwayne Johnson’s antihero has powers and strength that are comparable to the Man of Steel’s abilities. They may even be greater than Superman’s gifts. But the thing that makes Black Adam so dangerous is that he lacks the moral compass of a hero. And he absolutely does not hold back in the newly released trailer for Black Adam. The only question now is will Black Adam use his powers to save this world from itself? Or will he destroy it instead?

BLACK ADAM - Official Trailer 2

In DC’s comic book lore, Black Adam was the original champion of the wizard Shazam, before he was exiled for his hubris and his fall from grace. Now, Black Adam has escaped after 5,000 years of imprisonment, and no one can truly challenge his might as he dispenses his own brand of justice. That’s why the Justice Society of America has been called in to deal with Adam.

The Justice Society may not be as famous as the Justice League, but these are the legacy heroes of this world whose lineage goes back to World War II and beyond. Aldis Hodge co-stars as Carter Hall/Hawkman, with Noah Centineo as Albert “Al” Rothstein/Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell as Maxine Hunkel/Cyclone, and Pierce Brosnan as Kent Nelson/Doctor Fate.

In the trailer, Hawkman foolishly underestimates Black Adam’s power and is subsequently outmatched. In contrast, Nelson attempts to appeal to Black Adam’s better nature. But he may find that Black Adam has no better nature. And he has no inclination to peacefully coexist with the so-called heroes of this world. Note that the head of Task Force X/The Suicide Squad, Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), has also made it her business to bring Black Adam down — if that’s even possible, given his god-like abilities.

Jaume Collet-Serra directed the film from a script by Adam Sztykiel. Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani. Black Adam will finally hit theaters on Friday, October 21.

Warner Bros. pushes back Black Adam, Flash, and Aquaman 2
Dwayne Johnson in Black Adam.

In theory, Warner Bros. Pictures should be basking in the spotlight of The Batman's impressive opening weekend, secure in the knowledge that three other big DC films are coming this year. However, those plans received a major shake-up today, as two of this year's marquee superhero films have been pushed all the way back into next year.

Via Variety, The Flash movie, which was previously slated to race into theaters on November 4, will now arrive on June 23, 2023. Meanwhile, the Aquaman sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, is not set to be released on March 17, 2023, three months after its former date of December 16.

Keanu Reeves is Batman in DC League of Super-Pets trailer
Ace and Batman in DC League of Super-Pets.

This weekend, movie theaters belonged to The Batman as Robert Pattinson stepped into the title role to make it his own. However, he's not the only Batman in the multiverse, or even the only Batman that will make his debut this year. Ahead of the film, Warner Bros. Pictures premiered a new trailer for the kid-friendly stand-alone animated film DC League of Super-Pets. And in this footage, the Dark Knight was voiced by none other than Keanu Reeves.

Reeves is best known for his leading roles in The Matrix and John Wick films. He might be a little too old to pull off a live-action Batman, but in animation, Reeves gets to embrace the two sides of the Caped Crusader. He's the grim avenger of the night, as well as a softer hero with a heart who can't resist the charms of his new pet, Ace the Bat-Hound.

What’s new in movie theaters: The Batman and After Yang
Split image of a family posing in the After Yang poster & Batman in The Batman.

After reigning at the box office for nearly three months thanks to Spider-Man: No Way Home and Uncharted, Tom Holland will encounter a foe that even he can't beat on March 4: Batman. Warner Bros. has unleashed the latest iteration of one of its most valuable characters with Matt Reeves' The Batman. In a rare move, no rival studio is set to launch a wide-release movie that weekend or the next, with all of Hollywood anticipating (and hoping) the Dark Knight can pump as much cash into the industry as his Marvel counterpart did in December.

Besides Batman, there are other movies being released in theaters that target different audiences. This weekend, Colin Farrell sheds his Penguin prosthetics and stars as a grieving father in the near future in After Yang. It's all part of an ongoing process that Hollywood hopes will get the box office back to where it was before the COVID-19 pandemic.
