Black Mirror officially picked up by Netflix for all-new, 12-episode run

black mirror netflix new episodes in memoriam 1
Earlier this month we found out that Netflix might step in to produce new episodes of Black Mirror, the cult-hit, sci-fi thriller from across the pond, and today Variety is reporting that the streaming giant has officially picked the show up for an all-new, 12-episode run.

Winner of an International Emmy Award in the TV Movie/Mini-Series category and a Peabody Award, Black Mirror explores the darkest corners of modern existence. Think Twilight Zone, but for the digital age … or a more subtle, non-awful One Missed Call.

The twisted scenarios depicted in the first two seasons center around the theme of our slavish reliance on technology, and how it gives us the tools to torture ourselves/each other in increasingly inventive and horrifying ways.

The series first aired on the U.K.’s Channel 4, and has two full-length seasons under its belt, both of which are currently available on Netflix. Apparently, however, that wasn’t enough for the streaming service and it decided to take matters into its own hands.

Charlie Brooker, who executive produced the first seven episodes of the series, told Variety “It’s all very exciting — a whole new bunch of ‘Black Mirror’ episodes on the most fitting platform imaginable … Netflix connects us with a global audience so that we can create bigger, stranger, more international and diverse stories than before, whilst maintaining that ‘Black Mirror’ feel. I just hope none of these new story ideas come true.”

We don’t have a release date yet, but the wheels have been set in motion and it’s only a matter of time before you can binge on a dozen of bizarre, disturbing, darkly comedic installments of Black Mirror.

Who’s the fairest streamer of them all? The answer seems pretty obvious at this point.

Black Mirror: Season 5 | Official Trailer | Netflix

Charlie Brooker's award-winning sci-fi series Black Mirror is like a new generation’s version of The Twilight Zone (which recently returned to television), but with a modern, technology-driven twist. The series' dark, ominous stories examine what might happen if technological development, and our seemingly innocuous digital habits, were taken too far. Surprise endings or terrifying awakenings are at the core of every episode, so it’s no surprise that each of the short but compelling seasons has mesmerized viewers and, with everything going on in the world right now, occasionally hit close to home in unexpected ways.

You might say some of us at Digital Trends have been preparing for this for most of our adult lives, and believe us when we tell you that tensions were high, rankings were excruciating, and some damn good episodes were left on the cutting room floor. It was really that brutal.

We don't know what we're going to do once The Office is gone from our favorite streamer, but let's not think about that just yet. Now's the time to immerse ourselves in all our favorite episodes while we can. So save your tears for 2021, grab a cocktail (might we suggest an orange-vod-juice-ka?), and take a trip down memory lane with our list of the best Office episodes. You'll probably want to set aside a day or two, though -- they're moreish.
