Marvel has reportedly found its ‘Captain Marvel’ actress

The search may be over for an actress to play Carol Danvers, the superhero known as Captain Marvel.

A new report indicates that Academy Award winner Brie Larson is in talks to play Captain Marvel in an upcoming solo film, with the character’s live-action debut expected to happen in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1. The Captain Marvel movie is then scheduled to premiere in March 2019, a few months before Avengers: Infinity War: Part 2.

Variety initially reported Larson’s attachment to the role, and indicated that the Room and 21 Jump Street actress is currently in early talks for the role after becoming the front-runner to play Danvers in the film.

Created by Roy Thomas and Gene Colan, Carol Danvers made her first appearance in a 1968 issue of Marvel Super-Heroes. Although her origin story has been revised over time, she’s generally portrayed as a human whose DNA was mixed with the genetic material of the Kree — the powerful, blue-skinned alien race that has featured prominently in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television series. Her altered DNA gives her superhuman strength, stamina, and durability, as well as the ability to fly. She can also absorb various types of energy and project them outward in explosive blasts.

One of Marvel Comics’ greatest female superheroes, Danvers was a security chief in the United States Air Force when the incident occurred that gave her superhuman powers, and she was already highly skilled in combat, military tactics, and espionage prior to becoming a superhero. She initially went by the name “Ms. Marvel,” and subsequently adopted other nicknames — including “Binary” and “Warbird” — before taking the mantle of “Captain Marvel” from the deceased superhero who had previously gone by that title.

Official confirmation of Larson — or another actress — for the role of Carol Danvers will likely come soon, as Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 is expected to begin production later this year. There’s no director attached to Captain Marvel at this point, but the script is currently being penned by Guardians of the Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman and Inside Out co-writer Meg LeFauve.

Captain Marvel is scheduled to hit theaters March 8, 2019.

Marvel adds The Nevers’ Laura Donnelly to its Halloween Special
Laura Donnelly in Outlander.

Over the last decade, Marvel's superheroes have become an even bigger cultural phenomenon than they were before the studio began making movies. But later this year, things will get spooky as Marvel Studios' Halloween Special on Disney+ explores the horrifying side of the MCU. While details about the Halloween Special have been scarce, Deadline is reporting that The Nevers' leading lady, Laura Donnelly, has been cast to play a major role.

Marvel has yet to publicly announce this project, and the studio was characteristically silent about whom Donnelly will portray. That said, there are many possible horror heroines who could fit the bill. During Marvel's '70s horror comics craze, Lilith, Satana, and Jennifer Kale were introduced as supporting characters. However, Deadline speculates that Donnelly will play Nina Price, Marvel's Vampire by Night. Despite the implications of that title, Nina is not a true vampire. Instead, she is a vampire/werewolf hybrid whose otherworldly nature only emerges after sunset.

Marvel’s Avengers will finally add Spider-Man and its first raid
Avengers standing together

Crystal Dynamics recently released a 2021 road map for Marvel's Avengers. It showcases all of the new content that players can expect for the rest of the year. Most notable in the road map is that Spider-Man is finally coming as a playable character, plus players will see the game's first raid and new reworks to the gear and resources.

It has been a full year since Marvel's Avengers was released, and it has seen a plethora of updates and changes to help it rebound from its less than ideal launch. With this new road map, players will finally get content that was supposed to be in the game since the start. Before the game was released, Square Enix announced that Spider-Man would be a playable character for PlayStation players. However, it has been a full year and Spider-Man has not swung into the game as of yet. The webslinger will finally join the roster with a new Hero Event, but no other details have been announced.
