The project, which is currently in development, was created by Bicks but is based on an idea from Ellin and writer Joey Boukadakis. The comedy would center on a successful young couple as they start an “unconventional” family. Bicks is set to write and executive produce through Perkins Street Productions, while Ellin is attached to executive produce via his Halyard Park banner.
Bicks also worked as a writer during her Sex and the City Days, and her other credits as producer include The Big C and Men in Trees. She’s currently working on an HBO comedy pilot with Whitney Cummings, along with TV Land’s First Wives Club. Meanwhile, Ellin’s resume includes Life With Bonnie, the Entourage movie, and Bad Santa 2, which is due out in 2016. Terri Weinberg will executive produce as well.
Sex and the City and Entourage were both HBO darlings, each gaining a huge following. They were similar in that they each focused on a group of friends grappling with adulthood, sex, relationships, careers, and more, often incorporating somewhat to very raunchy humor. Both series spawned at least one movie after concluding their TV run.
For all their similarities, however, the shows were also opposites in many ways. Sex and the City followed four women in New York City, while Entourage centered on a group of men in Los Angeles. Not surprisingly, the series appealed primarily to members of their own sex.
Bringing together Bicks and Ellin seems like a prime opportunity to reach both audiences, albeit on a network where content will have to be decidedly tamer. Nonetheless, each show skillfully portrayed modern friendships and managed to group dynamics that were popular with viewers, and the prospective CBS comedy seems poised to do the same.
