charlie cox cast daredevil netflix series 1

Things are moving quickly for Marvel’s upcoming Daredevil series on Netflix. Just a few days after changing showrunners on the project, Marvel announced the identity of its lead actor for the 13-episode series, which will debut in 2015.

Charlie-CoxBritish actor Charlie Cox will take on the role of Matt Murdock, who lost his sense of sight as a child but had the rest of his senses enhanced to superhuman levels. A lawyer by day in New York City’s neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen, Murdock fights crime as the costumed vigilante Daredevil by night.

Cox is probably best known for his role in the popular television series Boardwalk Empire, as well as his starring role in the 2007 fantasy film Stardust, which was co-written and directed by Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class) and based on a novel by Neil Gaiman.

Along with announcing the casting of Cox, Marvel.com also offered up some confirmation of the series’ modern-day setting, which was the subject of speculation given the continuity of Marvel’s cinematic universe and the evolution of the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood since the character was first introduced. When the character Daredevil was created by Stan Lee and Bill Everett in 1964, the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood was a notoriously rough area of New York City. Now, the neighborhood is regarded as one of the city’s more trendy (and relatively safe) hotspots.

Marvel’s Daredevil will be the first of four 13-episode interconnected miniseries’ produced for Netflix, with a fifth miniseries planned that will bring the stars of the previous series’ — Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist — together for a team-up as The Defenders.

Kin’s Clare Dunne on Charlie Cox’s generosity & shooting during COVID
Amanda raises a wine glass in Kin.

What would you do for your family? That's the question asked repeatedly in the Irish crime drama Kin, and the answer is often accompanied by bursts of violence and dead bodies on the ground. Starring Daredevil's Charlie Cox as a recently released criminal hell-bent on revenge, the series stars some of Ireland's best actors, including recent Oscar nominee Ciarán Hinds (Belfast) and Peaky Blinders' Aidan Gillen.

As the lead female in the cast, Clare Dunne brings tremendous depth and power to the role of Amanda Kinsella, who has the most dramatic transformation in season 1 as tragedy transforms her from a content mother to a woman increasingly submerged in criminal activity. In a conversation with Digital Trends, Dunne talks about preparing for the role while in the middle of a pandemic, the generosity of her co-star Charlie Cox, and the grueling task of shooting on a tight schedule.

Heartstopper trailer shows Netflix’s next big romantic series
The cast of Heartstopper.

Later this month, Netflix is turning traditional teenage coming-of-age shows on their head with Heartstopper, an LGBT love story that tackles romance in an unexpected way. In the first trailer for the series, viewers meet Charlie Spring (Joe Locke), a very geeky and gay teenager who hasn't found anyone to return his romantic love. And yet sparks fly almost immediately when Charlie meets Nick Nelson (Kit Connor). Nick is almost everything Charlie isn't, including athletic, popular, and heterosexual.

The gulf between Charlie and Nick's desires seems so insurmountable that Charlie actually asks one of his friends how he can stop feeling so strongly about Nick. And while Nick may not realize it, he appears to have feelings for Charlie too. He even invites Charlie to join him on the rugby team, even though sports and Charlie looks like a bad mix. It's ambiguous at the moment if Nick made that request just as an excuse to spend more time with Charlie.
