Get to know the ghosts of Crimson Peak in a new video

Crimson Peak - Featurette: I Remember: Ghosts (HD)
We’re fast approaching the season for scary movies, and one of the most high-profile films hitting theaters in October is Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak, a gothic haunted-house horror movie that appears to offer more than enough nightmare fuel to carry you through Halloween.

Legendary and Universal Pictures have released a new video featurette that looks at some of the ghosts of Crimson Peak and the home they haunt, as well as how the design of the film’s mansion set contributes to the overall spookiness of the environment.

The brief video focuses on one particular portion of the gothic mansion where the film is set: a dark corridor that Del Toro considers one of his favorite sets in the movie. Shaped like the negative image of a human body with sharp spikes ringed around its edges, the hallway would almost certainly look scary in daylight, and could easily become terrifying in the dark world of Del Toro’s film.

The video also provides an up-close look at one of the spine-chilling ghosts in the film — which will likely feature quite a few nightmare-inducing sequences.

Written by Del Toro and Matthew Robbins (Mimic), Crimson Peak follows an aspiring author played by Mia Wasikowska (Stoker, Alice in Wonderland) who is swept away to the family mansion of a charming, mysterious stranger (Tom Hiddleston), and finds herself torn between his affections and her love for a childhood friend (Charlie Hunnam). The film also stars Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) and Jim Beaver (Supernatural).

Back in March, acclaimed horror novelist Stephen King called Crimson Peak “gorgeous” and “terrifying” after seeing an early screening of the film.

Crimson Peak electrified me in the same way Sam Rami’s Evil Dead electrified me when I saw it for the first time way back in the day,” wrote King.

Crimson Peak will arrive in standard and IMAX theaters October 16, just in time for Halloween.

Go behind the screams of Smile in the horror film’s new video
A creepy grin from Smile.

A genuine smile can brighten your day. But you probably won't see any of those life-affirming grins in Smile, an upcoming horror film from writer and director Parker Finn. Not even a dental hygienist could take pride in these twisted portents of doom. And as Finn explains in a new video featurette for the movie, the entity behind this curse uses smiles as a way to mask its intentions. Although given the clearly malevolent intent behind those expressions, it's hard to argue that it's an effective mask. It's more like a non-verbal threat.

Malware has a terrible new way to get to your computer
A villager looks at a sunset.

You've heard of malware spreading through spammy emails and mysterious links on strange websites. But now there's a new avenue of attack for bad actors to take -- and it's via Minecraft. Yes, you read it correctly. The open-world building game loved by seven-year-olds around the globe is quickly becoming a favorite method for spreading malware.

As reported by Bleeping Computer, Kaspersky Labs researched the phenomena from July 2021 until July 2022, and it found that in-game malware accounted for a significant amount of the malware that was spread in that time. Although there was a 30% drop in malware attacks in that year when compared to 2020, the amount of gaming-related malware actually increased. Minecraft on PC was the preferred vector.
