Despite the upcoming Ghostbusters movie being a complete reboot of the franchise, there have been rumors that some of the film’s original cast could make cameos in the new film (in completely different roles, of course). Those rumors were confirmed this week when original Ghostbusters franchise co-writer and star Dan Aykroyd announced that he was filming a scene for the movie with actress Kristen Wiig.
Aykroyd posted the announcement on Twitter yesterday (July 14), stating that he was “On GB set shooting my scene with funny beautiful Kristen Wiig Lady GB’s are adorable, hilarious and badass Exhilarating! #ghostbusters” The message was subsequently deleted, but — as with all things to appear online — not before someone managed to save it for posterity.
After the message was deleted, EW managed to get some additional, official confirmation from Aykroyd’s representatives that he would indeed be appearing in the film. The role he’ll be playing, however, remains a mystery.
Still, that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating and rumors from circulating. Over at Indie Revolver, there’s an unconfirmed description (SPOILER WARNING) of the scene featuring Aykroyd that would certainly make sense for the film. If you want to be surprised, though, you should probably avoid reading the scoop — just in case.
Directed by Bridesmaids filmmaker Paul Feig and starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones as the quartet of paranormal exterminators, the Ghostbusters reboot was co-written by Feig and Katie Dippold. The cast also includes Chris Hemsworth as the team’s secretary, Andy Garcia as the Mayor of New York City, Neil Casey as the film’s unidentified villain, and Michael K. Williams and Matt Walsh as a pair of characters named “Hawkins” and “Rourke,” respectively. Television news anchor Pat Kiernan will also appear in the film as — surprise — a news anchor.
The Ghostbusters reboot is scheduled to hit theaters July 22, 2016.
