The details of Glover’s character are being closely guarded, but we do know that he adds more talent to an already impressive cast. Spider-Man: Homecoming currently stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Michael Keaton as a villain, and Zendaya as another key character. On top of that, Robert Downey Jr. is on board as his usual Marvel character Tony Stark (aka Iron Man), while the cast also includes Tony Revolori and Laura Harrier.
The film will return to Peter Parker’s high school days, reintroducing the character as the franchise reboots Spider-Man once again. Holland recently made his debut as the web-slinging superhero in Captain America: Civil War, which was met with immense box office success. The film has brought in over $1.14 billion worldwide so far, according to Box Office Mojo data at the time of publishing.
Interestingly, many fans previously called for Glover to play the arachnid hero himself prior to 2012’s Amazing Spider-Man. Andrew Garfield ultimately ended up with the part in the film as well as its sequel. For Glover, though, Homecoming won’t be his first contribution to a Spider-Man project; he lent his voice to Miles Morales in the animated series Ultimate Spider-Man on Disney XD.
Glover comes to the cast with a number of notable credits to his name, including roles in The Martian and in NBC’s Community. He is also known for his work as a musician, rapping under the stage name Childish Gambino and performing DJ stylings as mcDJ. His talent, coupled with his obvious love for the franchise, seems like an ideal casting, so hopefully, talks will pan out.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is due to hit theaters on July 7, 2017.
