Everything coming to HBO Max in May 2023

There’s no better cable network or streamer than HBO Max right now. The forthcoming name change aside, HBO Max is still celebrating its winter triumph, The Last of Us. The fourth and final seasons of Succession and Barry are currently in full swing, and a buzzy new limited series, Love & Death, just premiered to critical acclaim.

HBO Max’s May 2023 schedule promises to keep the party going with a bevy of new releases that include the true crime comedy White House Plumbers with Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux. In addition, the fan-favorite series The Other Two returns for a third season and the original documentary Love to Love You, Donna Summer premieres at the end of the month.

The 10 most popular shows on (HBO) Max right now
Colin Farrell in The Penguin.

Only two shows from last month's list of the 10 most popular shows on Max are still on the list in October: Last Week Tonight and The Real Elm Street Murders. Thankfully, the HBO original series The Penguin is on top of the chart, with The Franchise close behind. The one animated offering on the list this month is the horror anime Uzumaki, which seems to be turning heads.

But aside from those shows and HBO's documentary I Am Not a Monster, the rest are all Discovery reality series, two of which are 90 Day Fiancée spinoffs. But if you hate reality TV, feel free to skip those choices.

5 HBO (Max) shows that are perfect to stream for the fall
Joel and Ellie look at each other on a rooftop in The Last of Us Episode 9.

Ah, the sweet smells of fall. The season marks a turning of the weather as leaves fall to the ground in many areas and the air gets cooler. It also means prepping for the holidays. A nice way to unwind after a busy day at work, weekend of chores, and trying to figure out all your upcoming plans, is to relax with a good TV show. Max, formerly HBO Max, has tons from which to choose.

There are five HBO (Max) shows that are perfect to stream for the fall. They include one you’ll want to re-watch (if you’ve seen it already) before the new season arrives, a new show that is making waves, a current comedy, and a show you can watch with the kids, too.

If you have to watch one (HBO) Max movie in October 2024, stream this one
An old man talks on a phone in Misery.

Horror lovers will find a lot of options to enjoy on Max in October, especially if they love the work of Stephen King. The long-delayed reboot of King's Salem's Lot arrived on Max earlier this month alongside previous adaptations like Doctor Sleep, The Shining, the original Salem's Lot, and both the TV and film versions of It. But if you're looking for an understated tale of terror from the master of horror, then the one (HBO) Max movie that you have to watch in October is Misery.

King wrote the original novel in 1987 as a parable for his addiction to drugs and perhaps for his aversion from his most devoted fans. Rob Reiner directed the film from legendary screenwriter William Goldman, who previously collaborated with the director on The Princess Bride. It's the story of a novelist, Paul Sheldon (James Caan), whose life is saved by his "biggest fan," Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), before she makes his existence a living hell by holding him captive and forcing him to write for her. Screen icon Lauren Bacall has a small role as Paul's agent, Marcia Sindell, and there are a handful of other actors as well. Yet for the most part, Bates and Caan carry this movie by themselves.
