In the immortal words of Boyz II Men, “It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday,” and that’s never been more true for Hulu than in June 2023, when a handful of excellent movies, TV shows, and documentaries are leaving the streamer for an undetermined length of time.

But bad news can also be good news, as this serves as an excellent motivation to watch those programs you’ve always wanted to see, but never got a chance to. From a psychedelic musical starring Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman to one of the best movies of the last decade featuring sci-fi king Han Solo himself, Harrison Ford, Hulu has a lot of expiring content this month to warrant one last viewing before they go away.

5 movies you need to watch in August 2023

Last year, the movie industry was on shaky ground. The COVID recovery was still in its earliest stages, and while there were hits like Top Gun: Maverick, there were fewer movies actually showing in theaters. Worst of all was the month of August, when only one big Hollywood movie, the mediocre action comedy Bullet Train, was released.

What a difference a year makes. In August 2023, Hollywood has packed the slate with a diverse selection of movies ranging from a comic book movie (the sure-to-fail DC Comics movie Blue Beetle), a video game adaptation (Gran Turismo), and the usual mixture of action movies, thrillers, and comedies. Here are the five best movies you should check out in August, and why they are worth going to the movies to see.

All good things must come to an end: romances, seasons, even Twitter's company name. (Seriously, Elon, X???). That's never been more true for streaming content libraries. Every month, as more movies and shows are added to each of the many streamers out there, it seems just as much content leaves as well.

HBO Max isn't immune to this vicious cycle, and in August 2023, a fair amount of films are leaving the service for an undetermined amount of time. From several Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies (no doubt to celebrate the new animated movie Mutant Mayhem) to the excellent Christopher Nolan movie Dunkirk to pretty much every Hellraiser movie ever made, there's a lot of good stuff leaving, so check out the list below and try to watch some of these gems before they leave Max for good (or at least a long while).

San Diego Comic-Con 2023 was a quieter affair than usual. Because studios refuse to pay their actors and writers what they deserve, the ongoing SAG/AFTRA and WGA strikes continue, halting most ongoing productions and preventing talent from promoting their current or upcoming projects. Still, Comic-Con weathered the storm by pivoting back to its original raison d'etre: comic books. That's not to say a few movies and shows didn't make the cut, although the focus was firmly away from Hollywood and back into print.

Comic-Con was once the pinnacle of pop culture; alas, it has lost some of its luster, especially after the pandemic and amidst an increasingly erratic entertainment industry. The 2023 iteration didn't do much to return it to its once mighty place, but it provided enough interesting announcements to keep it in the conversation, at least until next year. And although only a handful of intriguing announcements came out of Comic-Con 2023, they are exciting enough to keep fans invested in the long-running and revered convention.
