Everything leaving Max (formerly HBO Max) in August 2023

Soldiers gather on a boat in Dunkirk.
Warner Bros.

All good things must come to an end: romances, seasons, even Twitter’s company name. (Seriously, Elon, X???). That’s never been more true for streaming content libraries. Every month, as more movies and shows are added to each of the many streamers out there, it seems just as much content leaves as well.

HBO Max isn’t immune to this vicious cycle, and in August 2023, a fair amount of films are leaving the service for an undetermined amount of time. From several Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies (no doubt to celebrate the new animated movie Mutant Mayhem) to the excellent Christopher Nolan movie Dunkirk to pretty much every Hellraiser movie ever made, there’s a lot of good stuff leaving, so check out the list below and try to watch some of these gems before they leave Max for good (or at least a long while).

Editor’s note: this list may not be comprehensive and is subject to change by the network/streamer.

What’s new on Amazon Prime Video in August 2023
A woman hides from a bear in Cocaine Bear.

Amazon Prime Video doesn't always tout it, but the streamer's deals with Paramount and Universal Pictures mean that some of this year's theatrical releases are coming to Prime Video after brief runs on Paramount+ and Peacock. This month, that applies to the sleeper hit, Cocaine Bear, and the surprisingly well-executed Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. If that's not enough, Prime Video is also adding a number of recent films and classic movies early in August including Amadeus, Galaxy Quest, Women Talking, and more.

Intriguingly, Prime Video is also adding '80s TV hits LA Law and Matlock early in August. And near the end of the month, NFL fans can celebrate the return of Thursday Night Football. Additionally, the new seasons of The Summer I Turned Pretty and Good Omens. will continue throughout the month.

What’s new on Paramount+ in August 2023
The four TMNT brothers enjoy a lighter moment in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Depending upon which tier you subscribe to, Paramount+ can be a very different experience. The standard tier is the Paramount+ that you remember, including original shows and classic movies interrupted by commercials. The highest tier, Paramount+ with Showtime, offers more movies and more original shows, including the seventh season of the acclaimed Showtime series, The Chi and Billions. But if you want more, you'll have to pay more.

All tiers of Paramount+ will get to stream films like Gone Baby Gone, Rudy, Sicario, The Running Man, and The Truman Show. Additionally, since Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is coming to theaters in August, Paramount+ is bringing the first three live-action films and the first TMNT animated movie back to streaming.

5 LGBTQ movies and TV shows you need to watch in August
Nick and Charlie look at their phones in Heartstopper.

August is typically the month that the summer season starts to wind down. Kids prepare to go back to school, while adults figure out how to spend the last few days of vacation they have left for the season. On the movies and streaming front, however, the schedule remains as busy as ever, and that holds true for content about the LGBTQ+ experience.

In theaters, the comedy Bottoms and the drama Passages showcase the highs and lows of love, while the hit Netflix streaming show Heartstopper returns for a second season. In addition, there's an incisive documentary about a famously closeted gay Hollywood star on Max while Prime Video debuts a charming rom-com about the First Son and the Prince of England having a secret romance. There's something for everyone, and these five LGBTQ movies and shows are sure to keep you entertained well into the fall.
