Filled with new footage, the latest preview features a young Reed Richards (played by Whiplash star Miles Teller) showing off his early aptitude for engineering and science via a teleportation experiment gone awry, then fast-forwards to the modern-day characters and the dimension-crossing journey that gave them superhuman abilities — for some, at the cost of their old lives. The trailer also hints at the threat facing the team from friend-turned-enemy Victor “Doom” Domashev.
Directed by Chronicle filmmaker Josh Trank, the film reportedly draws inspiration from Marvel’s 2004 series Ultimate Fantastic Four, which provided a contemporary reimagining of the superhero team and ran for 60 issues.
Along with Teller as the brilliant scientist Reed Richards, the film stars House of Cards actress Kate Mara as Sue Storm (a.k.a. The Invisible Woman), Fruitvale Station and Chronicle actor Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm (a.k.a. The Human Torch), and Billy Elliot actor Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm (a.k.a. The Thing). Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Wrath of the Titans actor Toby Kebbell plays Victor Domashev, the man who will become the team’s greatest enemy, Dr. Doom.
The supporting cast for the film includes Reg E. Cathey (The Wire) as Dr. Franklin Storm and Tim Blake Nelson (The Incredible Hulk) as Harvey Elder. The screenplay for the film was penned by X-Men franchise screenwriter Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past).
Fantastic Four hits theaters August 7.
