Death takes a bow in the first trailer for the 'Flatliners' remake

FLATLINERS - Official Trailer (HD)
It’s been almost a year since the last update on Sony Pictures’ remake of Flatliners, the 1990 thriller that followed a group of medical students on a mission to discover what happens after death. The latest news regarding the project is a pretty big, though, as it offers up the film’s very first trailer.

Featuring the tagline “You haven’t lived until you’ve died,” the trailer indicates that the remake will hew close to the source material, but with a more modern setting and some new twists on the terrifying experiences awaiting its characters.

Directed by Niels Arden Oplev, who helmed the original, Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the film follows in the footsteps of the original with an impressive ensemble cast led by Academy Award nominee Ellen Page (JunoInception). Page is joined by Diego Luna (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries), Kiersey Clemens (Dope), and James Norton (Happy Valley).

The script for the remake was penned by Source Code screenwriter Ben Ripley, and the story once again chronicles the experiences of five medical students staging a dangerous experiment in which they’re repeatedly brought back from death after having their hearts stopped. Hoping to gain some insight into what happens after we die, the students soon learn that blurring the boundary between life and death can have dark, deadly consequences and force them to face the sins of their pasts.

The original Flatliners was directed by Joel Schumacher (St. Elmo’s FireThe Lost Boys) and featured an all-star cast, with Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, William Baldwin, Oliver Platt, and Kevin Bacon playing the film’s medical students. The film’s script was penned by Peter Filardi (The Craft), and it earned more than $61 million during its initial theatrical run.

The remake of Flatliners is scheduled to hit theaters September 29.

The Hunger Games prequel The Ballad Of Songbirds and Snakes gets first trailer
A boy looks into the eyes of a girl alongside a fence in The Hunger Games prequel.

Head back to Panem and discover the origins of a young Coriolanus Snow (Billy the Kid's Tom Blyth), decades before he would rule as the oppressive president of the nation, in the first trailer for the prequel film The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. The film is based on the novel of the same name by The Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins.

Set 64 years before the events of The Hunger Games, the film follows an 18-year-old Snow, who is looking for a purpose as he tries to restore relevancy to his disgraced family in the Capitol. Ahead of the 10th Annual Hunger Games, Snow is assigned to mentor the female tribute from District 12, Lucy Gray Baird (West Side Story's Rachel Zegler). As Hunger Games co-creator Casca Highbottom (Game of Thrones' Peter Dinklage) tells Snow in the trailer, a mentor's job is to "turn these children into spectacles, not survivors." During the reaping ceremony, Baird boldly sings and curtsies to the crowd, reminding fans of another defiant District 12 tribute, Katniss Everdeen, who would unite the nation years later.

Dracula strikes in first trailer for The Last Voyage of the Demeter
Corey Hawkins and Liam Cunningham in The Last Voyage of the Demeter.

In retrospect, Universal Pictures may have made a mistake by releasing two Dracula-themed movies in the same year. While Renfield is coming out this week with a very comedic take on Dracula (and Nicolas Cage in that role), the upcoming horror flick The Last Voyage of the Demeter has a completely different tone. And if the first trailer is any indication, there are some genuine scares ahead.
