Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 adds Oldboy actress

We’re still a long way off from seeing Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 in theaters, but the much-anticipated sequel appears to be progressing along just fine with some recent casting news.

French-Canadian actress Pom Klementieff has reportedly joined the film’s cast after a wide search by Marvel Studios.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Klementieff will play an still-unidentified role in the film, which is expected to begin shooting in 2016.

Klementieff’s most notable role so far has been in Spike Lee’s 2013 remake of Oldboy, in which she played the deadly bodyguard of the film’s villain. She also appeared in the 2009 film Loup and this year’s Hacker’s Game.

The sequel to the third-highest-grossing film of 2014 both in U.S. theaters and worldwide, Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 will bring back stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, and Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket Raccoon. Director and co-writer James Gunn will also reprise his roles behind the camera for the sequel, which will pit the unlikely team of cosmic heroes against an even greater threat to the universe.

The original film was released August 1, 2014, and earned $333 million in U.S. theaters and an impressive $774 million worldwide. It also holds the record for the biggest August opening weekend of all time, thanks to its $94 million premiere, and earned two Academy Award nominations (for makeup and visual effects).

The next phase in the construction of Marvel Studios’ cinematic pantheon kicks off with Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016, then continues with Doctor Strange (Nov. 4, 2016), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (May 5, 2017), the untitled Spider-Man solo movie (July 28, 2017), Thor: Ragnarok (Nov. 3, 2017), Black Panther (Feb. 16, 2018), Avengers: Infinity War — Part I (May 4, 2018), Ant-Man and the Wasp (July 6, 2018), Captain Marvel (March 8, 2019), Avengers: Infinity War — Part II (May 3, 2019), and finally, Inhumans on July 12, 2019.

Who dies at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?

It's the end of an era. Nearly a decade ago, Guardians of the Galaxy changed the MCU forever and introduced the world to a band of a-holes who, over the course of several movies, grew into a family. Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Mantis, and Nebula have become sentimental favorites to MCU fans and helped usher in the cosmic side of Marvel that is the dominant playground for Phase 5.

When things come to an end, however, that usually means someone bites the big one. And certainly, in the press and trailers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, there's a strong indication that death will visit one or more of our beloved Guardians. Zoe Saldana has openly spoken about being done with playing Gamora, one of the MCU's best female characters, after this movie; ditto Dave Bautista with Drax. And one of the key promo images for the movie has Nebula carrying Star-Lord's limp body. Did I also mention one of the key plot points involves Rocket being mortally wounded?

When a certain type of movie ends, audiences know it's not time to leave the theaters just yet. It's now a ritual for audiences to linger after the end credits roll for superhero movies and even "regular" movies like John Wick: Chapter 4, as they know there will be one or two (or in some cases, more) "stingers" that tease about the endless sequels and cinematic universes that dominate the pop culture landscape. After a long and winding journey, Marvel Studios has finally released James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. This highly-anticipated film follows the Guardians as they face off against the Rocket’s creator, the High Evolutionary, in their darkest but most beautiful adventure yet.
