The series finale is by no means imminent, though, given that season five still hasn’t premiered. Fans will have two full seasons to say their goodbyes before the show ends in 2017. Six seasons is certainly a healthy run, and deciding to end Girls so far in advance allows the creative team to wrap the storylines up on their terms.
Ending the show well seems to be a priority for creator and star Lena Dunham, who has discussed the matter in past interviews. “I think America has a tendency to push shows past their due dates,” she told Variety in April 2015. “I like the British model — in and out.” She and HBO programming president Michael Lombardo reportedly discussed sticking with six seasons, and were apparently on the same page.
Between now and 2017, fans will be able to continue watching the misadventures of Girls‘ group of female 20-somethings as they adjust to adulthood. Season five will pick up six months after the season four finale and bring back its four core female stars, Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, and Zosia Mamet, as well as Adam Driver, Alex Karpovsky, and Andrew Rannells. Over the course of its four seasons so far, the series has won an Emmy Award, multiple Golden Globes, and a Peabody Award, among other honors.
HBO has not yet confirmed that season six will be the series’ last, but sources tell Variety that the official announcement will likely come Thursday during the network’s Television Critics Association press tour day.
Girls season five premieres on February 21.
