The series’ renewal was announced via a photo on the show’s Facebook page. A caption on the photo offers a cryptic tease of what’s to come for Kevin Spacey’s ruthless alter ego, Francis Underwood: “I will leave a legacy. #Underwood2016.”
The winner of multiple Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe awards over its first two seasons (and likely to earn even more for its third season), House of Cards follows the rise of South Carolina Congressman Francis Underwood through the ranks of the federal government. The series chronicles the serious — and occasionally deadly — power struggle that develops around Underwood as he schemes to put himself in a greater position of power.
Underwood is assisted in his climb to the top by his equally ruthless wife, Claire, played by Robin Wright. Both Spacey and Wright have earned multiple Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe Award nominations for their portrayal of the dangerously brilliant power couple.
The third season of the series saw Francis and Claire Underwood striving to maintain control of the power they’ve accumulated in the face of mounting threats from new and returning characters. With political opponents on all sides and their enemies looking to exploit any weaknesses, the already high pressure on the pair mounts, testing their remaining loyalties.
House of Cards is based on the BBC miniseries of the same name, which was itself based on the novel by Michael Dobbs. The series is produced by David Fincher, Joshua Donen, Beau Willimon, Kevin Spacey, Dana Brunetti, John David Coles, and Eric Roth.
There’s no word on the official release date for the fourth season of House of Cards at this point, but Netflix will likely reveal more details in the months to come.
