Russell Crowe joins Sony’s Kraven the Hunter movie

Sony’s superhero universe just got a little more crowded. The Hollywood Reporter announced today that Russell Crowe has joined the cast of Kraven the Hunter, the upcoming Spider-Man spinoff focusing on one of the Marvel hero’s major foes.

The casting announcement doesn’t detail which character Crowe will be playing, but it will most likely involve a lot of intense glaring and growling. Whatever role he plays, Crowe is a veteran of superhero movies, having memorably portrayed Superman’s father, Jor-El, in Man of Steel. He is also slated to play Zeus in the upcoming MCU movie Thor: Love and Thunder. Since Sony’s Spiderverse villain movies still exist in a separate continuity from the MCU’s, Crowe can be in both Thor and Kraven without too much conflict.

Kraven will be the fourth movie Sony has set up focusing on a Spider-Man supporting character. The first, Venom, was a worldwide hit, grossing nearly $900 million in 2018. Its 2020 sequel was also a success, grossing $500 million worldwide in a pandemic-challenged environment. The second, Morbius, has been floating around the release schedule for a couple of years now, with Sony eager to find the right time and place to launch it. That film, starring Jared Leto as the titular vampire antihero, is currently scheduled to release on April 1. Finally, Sony just announced a Madame Web movie with Dakota Johnson attached to star.

Kraven prepares for battle in the Amazing Spider-Man comic books.

J.C. Chandor is scheduled to direct Kraven with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, another veteran of superhero films, portraying the Marvel villain. Matt Holloway, Art Marcum, and Matt Tolmach will write the screenplay. They have plenty to work with as Kraven has been around since 1964, when he debuted in The Amazing Spider-Man No. 15. Kraven was an original member of the Sinister Six and later played a key role in one of Spider-Man’s greatest stories, Kraven’s Last Hunt.

Currently, there is no release date announced for Kraven the Hunter.

What’s new in Spider-Man: No Way Home’s More Fun Stuff Version
Andrew Garfield, Tom Holland, and Tobey Magure behind the scenes of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Spider-Man: No Way Home has swung back into theaters with the release of its extended cut, "The More Fun Stuff Version." Featuring 11 minutes of extra content, this longer film is a treat for audiences who enjoyed the original superhero blockbuster.

Overall, the movie's additional footage doesn't add any crucial details to the plot, as it's mainly bits of comedy sprinkled into the mix for the audience's enjoyment. Despite that, "The More Fun Stuff Version" makes for a fun cinematic experience that fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will want to see. For those considering seeing this new edition of the film, here's a list of notable changes audiences will want to look out for in theaters. Obviously, the following contains spoilers, but you wouldn't be here if you didn't know that, right?

In a world of Spider-Men, is it wise to be a Morbius?
Jared Leto as Morbius.

Morbius, Sony's long-gestating project starring Jared Leto, finally premiered on April 1 after almost two years of delays. The film centers on Morbius the Living Vampire, one of the many antiheroes in the Marvel mythos, who rose to prominence mainly by antagonizing everyone's favorite friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Morbius is the latest in Sony's so-called Spider-verse, its effort to create a cinematic universe mighty enough to compare with Kevin Feige's ubiquitous empire known as the MCU.

Sony's idea is not entirely ridiculous. After all, villains are often the most interesting and compelling characters in any given story. Would Hamlet be as timeless without Claudius? Would The Silence of the Lambs be as thrilling without Hannibal and Buffalo Bill? A great villain is vital for a successful story, perhaps more than a great hero. It's the villain that creates the conflict and drives the story, keeping audiences invested in the action. The comic book genre has the perfect example of this with The Dark Knight, by far the best live-action Batman movie and the outright best comic book movie in the eyes of many. Christian Bale's Batman might be the protagonist, but Heath Ledger's Joker is the star of the show, the puppeteer pulling Gotham's strings.

Kraven the Hunter adds Alessandro Nivola as the main villain
Alessandro Nivola in The Many Saints of Newark.

Following Morbius, Sony's next Spider-Man-adjacent film will follow perennial bad guy Kraven the Hunter.  Presumably the film will present Kraven as a more heroic figure. But who will be Kraven's main villain? Deadline has provided at least a partial answer. While the character's identity remains a secret, we do know he will be portrayed by Alessandro Nivola.

Nivola made his big-screen debut as Pollux Troy in Face/Off. Over the next 25 years, he appeared in numerous films including Inventing the Abbotts, Mansfield Park, Love's Labour's Lost, Jurassic Park III, Laurel Canyon, American Hustle, and The Art of Self-Defense. More recently, Nivola headlined The Sopranos' prequel movie The Many Saints of Newark.
