The rumored addition of Elektra to the second season of Netflix’s Daredevil is now a reality. Marvel announced Tuesday that French actress Elodie Yung will fill the role. Having played Jinx in the combat-heavy G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Yung seems well-equipped to hold her own as fan favorite antihero/assassin Elektra.
Fans picked up on the fact that Marvel was planning to add the character, thanks to veiled references in season 1. In the second, she’ll be introduced as “a mysterious woman from Matt Murdock’s past whose dangerous and exotic ways may be more than he can handle,” according to Marvel. Executive producer and head of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb said, “Paired with Charlie as Matt Murdock, the two will bring one of the most beloved and tumultuous comic book relationships to life with all the accompanying sparks and spectacular action sequences the show is known for.” It sounds we can expect a little more loving to go with all the fighting.
It took a worldwide search to find Yung, but Marvel seems happy with the decision. Loeb referred to her as “the perfect actress to embody both Elektra’s impressive and deadly physicality, as well as her psychological complexity.” She won’t be the only newcomer; The Walking Dead‘s Jon Bernthal recently signed on to play The Punisher.
Season 2 is already filming, and will pick up where the first season left off, following the adventures of Matt Murdock, a modern-day crime-fighter whose sense became superhuman after he was blinded in a childhood accident. The series also stars Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Jon Bernthal, and Rosario Dawson.
