Netflix teases Knives Out 2 and the rest of its 2022 films

The new year is only a month old, but Netflix wants to send an important message about its 2022 plans: It has no intention of giving up its status as the king of the streaming services. There will be 86 Netflix original movies released in 2022, which is 16 more than the 70 original flicks that Netflix released in 2021. In short, “every night is movie night.”

Netflix has released a promo video for its 2022 films that feature several A-list stars breaking character in the midst of their clips to extoll the virtues of Netflix’s approach. There’s even a first look at Knives Out 2, which is currently in production, with a return appearance by Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc.

One of the most prominently featured movies in the video is The Adam Project, which stars Ryan Reynolds as a pilot who travels back in time and teams up with his younger self to save the future. Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner, Walker Scobell, Catherine Keener, and Zoe Saldaña will co-star in the film, which is due March 11 on Netflix.

Some of the other intriguing flicks include Day Shift, which features Jamie Foxx as a vampire hunter; as well as The Gray Man, a new action film directed by Avengers: Endgame helmers Anthony and Joe Russo. They will guide an incredible cast that includes Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick, Wagner Moura, Dhanush, Billy Bob Thornton, Alfre Woodard, and Regé-Jean Page.

Another big movie coming to Netflix in 2022 is director Paul Feig’s The School For Good and Evil, which features Charlize Theron and Kerry Washington in the leading roles alongside Laurence Fishburne, Michelle Yeoh, Sofia Wylie, Sophie Anne Caruso, Jamie Flatters, Kit Young, Sir Ben Kingsley, Patti LuPone, and Rachel Bloom.

There may also be some surprises along the way. It certainly looks like Netflix’s 2022 lineup is going to be the envy of its rivals.

Glass Onion trailer unveils a new Knives Out murder mystery
Daniel Craig in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

In the original Knives Out, the film established that Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc was a world-famous detective from the moment he was first shown on screen. Thanks to the success of that film, Blanc's one-off murder mystery has become a full-blown franchise. In the first of two Netflix-produced sequels, Blanc will return to theaters later this month in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. And unlike the previous movie, Blanc is a part of the mystery from the very first moment.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will receive Thanksgiving theatrical release
Daniel Craig stands and ponders in a scene from Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

In a historic agreement with Netflix, exhibitors AMC, Regal, and Cinemark will release Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery in theaters before it premieres on the streaming service in December. The Knives Out sequel will open in theaters on Wednesday, November 23, which falls one day before Thanksgiving.

The unprecedented deal comes with a specific set of rules -- only 600 theaters in the U.S. and Canada will screen the film with additional markets overseas. Knives Out 2 will only run from November 23-29 before its removal from cinemas. There will then be a blackout period where the film won't be screened until it streams on Netflix starting December 23. Netflix is billing the one-week theatrical run as a "sneak preview." Netflix will reportedly withhold box office numbers during the weeklong run.

Everything revealed at Netflix’s Tudum 2022 event
Millie Bobby Brown in Enola Holmes 2.

Although Comic-Con finally returned this summer after a two-year absence, Netflix has apparently been holding out on us. Rather than debut many of its top series or movies in San Diego, Netflix has once again put its weight behind Tudum, an annual live-streaming event focused solely on Netflix itself.

And in case you don't recognize the origin of the name Tudum, it's the phonetic spelling of the sound played in Netflix's opening logo for all of its original shows and films. Below is a list of everything that was revealed at the event, which includes a spin-off of the popular Witcher franchise, yet another Pinocchio movie, and bloopers from popular shows like Stranger Things.
