Warning! Warning! Lost in Space reboot coming to Netflix

50 years after its CBS debut, a reboot of Irwin Allen’s 1965 cult classic sci-fi series Lost in Space has been announced by Netflix. The original iteration, starring June Lockhart and the late Guy Williams, followed the Robinson family exploring and — surprise, surprise — getting lost in space. Deadline reports that Netflix’s upcoming take on the straight-to-series order is part of the streamer’s new initiative to appeal to families. It may be on the darker side of things, though, as The Last Witch Hunter and Dracula Untold writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless will write the script.

In the original series, set in 1997 (three decades into the future at the time), the Robinsons’ spaceship, Jupiter 2, was driven off course by an enemy, Dr. Zachary Smith (played by Jonathan Harris). Joining the Robinson family in their ship was a robot (voiced by Dick Tufeld), which Dr. Smith planned on using to try to destroy the ship and its crew. Although he was unsuccessful, Jupiter 2 ended up crashing on an alien world the family called Priplanus, which set the scene for most of the show’s first season. Seasons 2 and 3 depicted the family further exploring Priplanus and other alien planets.

Neil Marshall (Doomsday, The Descent) will direct the reboot, which will be executive produced by Sazama, Sharpless and Synthesis Entertainment’s Kevin Burns. Burns and others had unsuccessfully tried to revive the classic story in the past, most recently in 2003, when WB Television commissioned a John Woo-directed pilot. Despite production by Synthesis Entertainment with Irwin Allen Productions, 20th Century Fox TV, and Regency TV, WB decided not to order a series.

New Line Cinema did produce a Stephen Hopkins-directed film adaptation in 1998 starring William Hurt, Matt LeBlanc, and Gary Oldman, but it received mostly negative reviews.

This upcoming version doesn’t yet have a release date or cast announced. Notably, Kevin Burns had been closely working with Irwin’s widow, Sheila Matthews Allen, on the reboot before her death in 2013.

In related news, all 83 original episodes of the series were released in a Blu-ray box set entitled Lost In Space: The Complete Adventures in honor of its 50th anniversary in September.

Enter the world of The Sandman in Netflix’s new trailer

In the late '80s and early '90s, writer Neil Gaiman and an assortment of artists collaborated on The Sandman comic book series, which helped redefine the medium for mature readers. It has taken the better part of three decades to bring this fantasy story to live-action, but the wait is almost over. Netflix has announced that the series will finally premiere this summer.

To go along with the news, Netflix dropped a new teaser trailer for the series which reveals how Morpheus (Tom Sturridge) was captured over a century ago. This was no small feat, since Morpheus is the King of Dreams and one of the Endless. Once Morpheus is freed, he finds himself somewhat unprepared for the mortal realm. And his own realm, the Dreaming, has been dying without his presence.

Neil Patrick Harris pines for love in Netflix’s Uncoupled

It's extremely rare for an actor to go from being a child star to having a truly successful career as an adult performer. It's also unusual for a single actor to star in two hit series that each went on to become a pop culture phenomenon. Neil Patrick Harris did both, first in Doogie Howser, M.D., and then on How I Met Your Mother. Harris subsequently had a large role on Netflix's A Series of Unfortunate Events, but he wasn't the lead character. But that's going to change this summer when Harris headlines the new Netflix original comedy series, Uncoupled.

Unlike many of his previous roles, Uncoupled will allow Harris to portray an openly gay man. And like any other man or woman, Michael (Harris) thought he had found a love that was going to last a lifetime. Unfortunately, that's not in the cards for Michael. The first teaser trailer for Uncoupled shows a few of the happy moments between Michael and his husband before their relationship was shattered forever. But just when Michael is ready to give up on love, a shared glance with another man gives him hope for the future.

Could the earliest building blocks of life have come from space?

It might sound outlandish, but it's possible that some of the earliest components of life were carried to Earth on a meteorite. Recent research has shown that all five of the basic building blocks of DNA have been found in meteorites.

To be clear, it isn't that DNA has been found on a rock from outer space. Rather, the result is that each of the five basic compounds which make up DNA and RNA, called nucleobases, have been found in meteorite samples. Previously, only three of these nucleobases had been found on meteorites, but recent research has identified the final two.
