What’s new on HBO and Max

We hope that you like Discovery shows because there are a lot of them on Max. And we mean a lot. They definitely overpower the HBO content for the month of August, except for the first of the month when Max adds several movies from the Warner Bros. cinema catalog in addition to a few films from other studios. Additionally, one of HBO’s signature series, Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, is back for its second season as the rivalry between the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers comes to the forefront during the ’80s.

Whether Max is still worth your money remains a question of your personal preference. The HBO originals and the film library are second to none, but Discovery’s “reality” shows are of dubious quality in our opinion. Regardless, we’ve included everything in our complete list of what’s coming to HBO and Max in August. Titles without “HBO” in the listing will only be available on Max. Our film and TV show recommendations are in bold.

What’s new on Netflix and what’s leaving in August 2023
5 people stand ready to fight in the Netflix series One Piece.

While July tends to be the most active month of the summer, Netflix isn't slowing down its momentum as it heads into August. The live-action anime adaptation, One Piece, is arriving at the end of the month. But before that rolls around, The Lincoln Lawyer will wrap up its second season, Heartstopper will return, and The Chosen One will explore what happens when the Messiah is finally reborn in the modern era. Additionally, Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot will headline the Netflix original action film, Heart of Stone.

What’s new on Amazon Prime Video in August 2023

Amazon Prime Video doesn't always tout it, but the streamer's deals with Paramount and Universal Pictures mean that some of this year's theatrical releases are coming to Prime Video after brief runs on Paramount+ and Peacock. This month, that applies to the sleeper hit, Cocaine Bear, and the surprisingly well-executed Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. If that's not enough, Prime Video is also adding a number of recent films and classic movies early in August including Amadeus, Galaxy Quest, Women Talking, and more.

Intriguingly, Prime Video is also adding '80s TV hits LA Law and Matlock early in August. And near the end of the month, NFL fans can celebrate the return of Thursday Night Football. Additionally, the new seasons of The Summer I Turned Pretty and Good Omens. will continue throughout the month.
