The actress will be joined in Lego Batman by comedic actors Will Arnett, Michael Cera, and Zach Galifianakis, who will play Batman, Robin, and The Joker, respectively.
Dawson is reportedly a huge comic book fan, though — at least professionally — that love is not divided along the typical Marvel/DC party lines. She recently finished filming the second season of the Netflix/Marvel original series Daredevil, where she co-stars as the Claire Temple/Night Nurse character. And Batgirl will not be her first DC universe hero — the actress previously voiced Wonder Woman for the comic book company’s animated series Justice League: Throne of Atlantis.
Batgirl is a character with an interesting backstory. The hero started life as Barbara Gordon, the daughter of the Gotham police commissioner and many-time Batman collaborator James Gordon. She becomes wrapped up in the same crime world as her father, and eventually transforms herself into Batgirl, much in the same way that Bruce Wayne becomes Batman.
Lego Batman is set to be released prior the the sequel of 2014’s much-loved Lego Movie, which also featured Will Arnett as Batman, and should exist in the same on-screen universe that fans loved in that film.
It should also look much like the Lego Movie; Animation supervisor Chris McKay is back on board for the new spinoff, and screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) is set to write the screenplay.
Given the cast and the screenwriter, it is hard to expect the film will be anything other than a straight-up action comedy, with DC leaving serious Batman drama for the now Ben Affleck-helmed Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice film, which will be in theaters next March.
Lego Batman will hit screens a year after the live action film, with a scheduled release day of February 10, 2017.
