More rumors hint at a Spider-Man crossover with Avengers movie universe

rumors hint spider man crossover avengers movie universe the
While Marvel Studios appears to be doing all it can to distance itself from the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot and the other big-screen franchises based on Marvel Comics properties that are currently owned by 20th Century Fox (namely, the X-Men movies), the studio’s relationship with Sony and its Spider-Man movie-verse appears to be a little less cold — and possibly getting even warmer in the years to come.

In a recent column about the wide-reaching effect that Marvel Studios’ success has had on the industry, HitFix makes passing mention of some unconfirmed plans regarding Sony’s Spider-Man franchise and the planned spinoffs that could forge a connection between those films and Marvel’s cinematic universe.

“While I can’t get the confirmations I need to verify the story, I’m hearing that there are some very cool Spider-Man plans being discussed that would help Sony refocus their enormously important franchise while also opening up some connections in the onscreen Marvel movie universe that would blow fandom’s minds,” reports the outlet.

“Will it work out? I don’t know,” continues the article. “I would love to be able to state for sure that it’s happening. What seems clear from what I’ve heard is that Marvel wants to be able to play with all of their characters, and if they can make that work creatively and on a corporate level, they will, and that means the world gets bigger again.”

A crossover between Spider-Man and the Marvel movies has long been rumored, and the groundwork for some of that synergy was considered in 2012 for The Avengers, with The Amazing Spider-Man producers revealing a while back that the Oscorp Tower from the Spider-Man universe was nearly included in the Manhattan skyline along with Stark Tower. Similar cross-pollination was intended for subsequent Spider-Man movies.

The studios weren’t able to reach an agreement in time to work the Oscorp reference into the film, but the notion that such a crossover was not only considered but actually came close to fruition lends some support to the recent suggestion of a Spider-Man/Avengers crossover. And with Sony and Marvel both setting up a long list of films over the next few years, there’s ample opportunity for such a crossover to still happen.

Which Marvel villains should be in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4?
Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

The MCU has plenty of upcoming projects that fans are excited about, but a potential fourth entry in Tom Holland's Spider-Man series is near the list's top. 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home ended with Holland's Peter entering a new phase in his life. Forgotten by the world and with no one left by his side, Peter is now closer to the perpetually down-on-his-luck version from the comics that fans have come to know and love. The ending is the perfect setup for a new Spidey adventure, with Spider-Man acting as the street-level hero he was always supposed to be. But who should he fight in his new adventure, especially now that he has no Avengers or Avengers-adjacent allies by his side?

Well, the possibilities are limitless. After all, Spider-Man has some of the best and most iconic villains in Marvel comics, and while many have already appeared in the Web Slinger's numerous live-action projects, some remain untouched by the film industry. From fearsome crime bosses to chameleonic supervillains, these infamous foes would make worthy enemies for Holland's Spider-Man.

Is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse streaming?
Miles Morales in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

It took almost five years, but the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is now in theaters. And Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is everything you could hope for from a follow-up -- and more. It has a much bigger scale than the first film, with literally hundreds of Spider-Heroes, at least five distinct animated worlds, and a ton of heart that is going to make this sequel a huge success.

The incredible visuals get people into theaters, but the characters are the reasons why they'll come back. Shameik Moore reprises his role as Miles Morales, a teenage Spider-Man who has a lot of questions about his future. Also returning from the first film are Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, New Girl's Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker, and Causeway's Brian Tyree Henry and Luna Lauren Vélez as Miles' parents, Jefferson and Rio Morales, both of whom have much meatier roles in the sequel.
