The MCU gets weirder as She-Hulk and Moon Knight spin-offs are set for Disney+

Ms. Marvel isn’t the only character hero getting her own show on Disney+. At D23 2019, Disney announced two more Marvel series for Disney+: She-Hulk and Moon Knight.

While Disney revealed the series’ titles and logos, it didn’t share any information regarding casting, plot lines, or release dates, although a timeline shown on-stage at D23 places all three series after Hawkeye, which debuts in fall 2021.

Still, it sounds like the characters will be part of the theatrical Marvel Cinematic Universe going forward. While discussing the new shows, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said that Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, and Moon Knight would debut in their respective Disney+ series, but would eventually appear on the big screen. All three shows are considered part of Marvel Phase 4.

In the comics, She-Hulk is also known as Jennifer Walters, a talented lawyer and Bruce Banner’s cousin. After Jen is shot by a mobster, Walters needs a quick blood transfusion — and Bruce (better known as the Hulk) happens to be the only person with a compatible blood type who’s nearby.

While Banner gamma-irradiated blood gives Jennifer Hulk powers of her own, they don’t work quite like Bruce’s. While Hulked out, Jen keeps her memories and her personality, allowing her to function in regular society even while she’s big and green. Feige said that She-Hulk will show Jen working as both a lawyer or a superhero.

He didn’t mention whether or not She-Hulk will break the fourth wall Deadpool-style to address the audience directly or whether she knows that she’s part of a fictional superhero series like she sometimes does in the comics.

Meanwhile, Moon Knight is often considered Marvel’s answer to Batman. Like Bruce Wayne, Marc Spector is an urban vigilante who powers his one-man fight on crime with his vast fortune. Unlike Bruce Wayne, he’s legitimately crazy, with multiple personalities that constantly vie for control of Spector’s body.

She-Hulk, Moon Knight, and Ms. Marvel join a growing number of Marvel Cinematic Universe spin-offs on Disney+, including Falcon and The Winter Soldier and WandaVision. If Marvel Studios hasn’t cast Moon Knight yet, we have a great suggestion for who should play him. Feige, give us a call.

Marvel debuts the first poster and trailer for She-Hulk
Tatiana Maslany as She-Hulk.

Marvel fans, you're about to meet the woman of your dreams. She's about seven feet tall, green, and she can carry a car over her shoulder. And unlike her cousin, you'll like her when she's angry. Earlier today, Marvel Studios debuted the first trailer for the upcoming She-Hulk original series on Disney+, and with the trailer came a new title: She-Hulk: Attorney At Law.

The series features Orphan Black veteran Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters, a successful attorney who just happens to be the cousin of the Hulk/Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo). In the comics, Jennifer's life was in danger after someone tried to kill her. To save her, Bruce gave Jennifer an emergency blood transfusion that transformed her into She-Hulk. The trailer doesn't focus on how Jennifer becomes She-Hulk. Instead, it explores how she deals with her newfound powers and the complications they represent.

Who is Ms. Marvel?: A brief guide to the MCU’s next big hero
The cast of Ms. Marvel.

In exactly 50 days, Ms. Marvel will premiere on Disney+ as the newest Marvel Studios original series. This also marks the first time that a character created in this century has headlined her own Marvel series. However, the relatively recent introduction of Ms. Marvel as a heroine means that she isn't as widely known as many of her fellow Marvel characters. But she has been one of the breakout creations of the last decade in Marvel's comic book universe -- and she could have the same impact in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well.

The first thing you need to know is that Ms. Marvel is a legacy character. Carol Danvers, the current Captain Marvel, was the original Ms. Marvel in 1977. The new Ms. Marvel is Kamala Khan, a teenage heroine created in 2013 by editors Sana Amanat and Stephen Wacker, writer G. Willow Wilson, and artists Adrian Alphona and Jamie McKelvie. The reason why Kamala took on the name Ms. Marvel is because she idolizes Carol.

Moon Knight stands over a crowd of beaten criminals in Moon Knight.

The suggestion that a new film or series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe breaks fresh ground for the franchise gets thrown around a lot in the lead-up to each project's release. While it's been true for some -- such as WandaVision or Thor: Ragnarok, which each pushed the boundaries of the MCU in bold and different ways -- most additions haven't strayed too far from the thematic center of Marvel's movieverse.

Given how reliably entertaining the MCU has been so far, that's fine -- but when the studio does take some risks, the results have made a great storytelling universe even better.
