Snoop Dogg rolls up a blunt new family drama for HBO

snoop dogg new hbo series
Rapper Snoop Dogg has dabbled in the TV biz before, but now the notorious rapper is delving deeper, creating a new drama series that will air on HBO, reports Deadline. And those familiar with the Dogg/Lion’s previous work may be surprised to find out that this new endeavor is a family saga.

The yet-to-be-titled series will reportedly be set in Los Angeles (naturally) in the early ‘80s, and follow a family who struggles with American politics getting in the way of their beloved community.

Snoop (aka Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr.) grew up in a port city just south of LA during the same time frame, so the show will likely draw on his own personal experiences. He will serve as executive producer with long-time manager, Stampede Management’s Ted Chung, along with Rodney Barnes (Everybody Hates Chris), and Allen Hughes (Gang Related). Barnes and Hughes will also serve as writer and director of the series, respectively.

The enduring rapper/celebrity has had plenty of TV experience leading up to his new project: Aside from many guest appearances over the years, and his hilarious recurring parody segment on Jimmy Kimmel Live called “Plizzanet Earth,” he also voiced a recurring character of animated family comedy The Boondocks, which Barnes also executive produced.

There’s no confirmed air date for the show, nor any more details about its plot or cast at this point.

Vote for Joker in the new trailer for Harley Quinn season 3
Vote Joker in Harley Quinn season 3.

In DC's comic book universe, The Joker once ran for office with a simple campaign slogan: "Vote for me or I'll kill you." It's an oddly compelling argument, in its own way. Now, one of The Joker's animated counterparts is also running for office in the new season of Harley Quinn on HBO Max. And as you can see in the trailer below, Joker has his sights set on becoming Gotham City's next mayor.

10 best episodes from Batman: The Animated Series on HBO Max
The shadowy silhouette of Batman standing atop a building in Gotham City.

The Batman has spread its wings and success over to HBO Max, opening up the movie to another segment of the general audience. The movie was a critical and commercial success, though the streaming platform has plenty of other solid Batman content available. In many ways, the early- to mid-'90s cartoon Batman: The Animated Series (BTAS) set the gold standard for how high the brooding superhero should be aiming for in any on-screen project.

BTAS perfectly balances the inherently whimsical nature of comic books with thought-provoking noir nuance. These episodes of The Animated Series, and by extension its sequel series, The New Batman Adventures (TNBA), are some of the best Dark Knight tales fans will find readily available.

HBO Max’s Hacks season 2 teaser is testing out new material
Hannah Einbinder and Jean Smart in Hacks.

The first season of Hacks quickly became one of the most popular original comedy series on HBO Max last year. Audiences just couldn't resist the two lead characters, Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder). On paper, the two women have little in common beyond comedic chops. However, Deborah badly needed new jokes to freshen up her Las Vegas comedy act while Ava was haunted by an insensitive tweet she wrote years before that nearly destroyed her Hollywood dreams. But as Deborah's new comedy writer, Ava has a chance to prove herself again and put the controversy behind her.

The first teaser trailer for Hacks season 2 has arrived, and it shows us the ups and downs of Deborah and Ava's relationship. There are times when Deborah acts like Ava's best friend in the world, but as the trailer also shows, there are moments when Deborah's wrath toward Ava is intense and frightening.
