Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to stream on Paramount+ May 24

The Blue Blur is coming to the small screen faster than the speed of sound once again. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will begin streaming on Paramount+ on May 24.

SEGAbits, a niche news site that covers Sonic and other Sega game franchises such as Yakuza, Jet Set Radio, and Streets of Rage, confirmed the streaming release date for Sonic 2 in a tweet Wednesday. This news corroborates Paramount Pictures’ announcement last year that the film would be released on the streaming service — which had just debuted at the time — 45 days after the start of its theatrical run.

The move to get the Sonic film sequel onto streaming 45 days after its run in theaters started after the first movie was given a digital home release on March 31, 2020. That move occurred when the pandemic placed everyone on lockdown, and movie theaters were closing down to protect moviegoers and employees from contracting Covid-19 in its early days. Although the pandemic has slowed in recent months, Sonic 2 streaming on Paramount+ early is a sign that the tradition of releasing movies 90 days after their theatrical run is irrevocably broken.

Early streaming is another hard-won victory for Sonic after the sequel became the number one video game movie of all time, surpassing its predecessor at the box office by a small margin. The films are so popular that a third movie is in development with a new teased main antagonist, along with a spin-off series centered on Knuckles the Echidna, making way for what fans call a Sonic Cinematic Universe.

New Sonic the Hedgehog 2 preview introduces Knuckles
Knuckles strikes in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

The original Sonic the Hedgehog film was an unexpected success for Paramount when it debuted in 2020. That's why the sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, is coming to theaters next month. The new film is also introduces Sonic's frenemy, Knuckles the Echidna, and delves into their shared roots in the Sega video game series. Knuckles wasn't always an ally to Sonic, and he's one of the primary villains in the new film.

Paramount has released a new preview clip from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that reunites Sonic with his old foe, Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Although Robotnik was exiled from Earth at the end of the last film, he's now back and has brought a new "friend" to help him take down Sonic. And if this scene is any indication, Knuckles may have greater power than his new rival.

Rotten Tomatoes’ Mark Ellis on Halo, Uncharted & video game adaptations

Mark Ellis is a comedian, actor, podcaster, and self-proclaimed "dog stepfather" who has been dissecting pop culture for over a decade. In addition to performing in comedy clubs nationwide, Ellis co-hosts Rotten Tomatoes is Wrong, where he dissects both critically fresh and rotten movies like Spider-Man 3, Cats, and Thor: The Dark World, and regularly appears on The Rotten Tomatoes Channel (which can be found on Peacock, The Roku Channel, XUMO TV, and Samsung TV plus) to discuss a wide variety of topics, from this year's Academy Awards to the rough critical reception of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Ellis took time away from his duties as a Rotten Tomatoes contributing editor and correspondent to talk to Digital Trends about the recent proliferation of video game adaptations on the big and small screen. Ellis weighs in on the less-than-stellar reputation of past video game movies such as Super Mario Bros., why Uncharted may signal a sea change on how these movies are produced by studios and received by audiences, and whether or not a video game adaptation will ever win Best Picture at the Oscars.

The best video game movies, ranked by Rotten Tomatoes
Split image of Sonic the Hedgehog, Rampage, & Detective Pikachu.

Video game adaptations have a notorious reputation for being awful. Decades of bad movies will do that, as directors high (Duncan Jones, Justin Kurzel) and low (Uwe Boll, pretty much everyone else) have struggled to translate the success in one medium to another. What makes video games, which have only grown to be more cinematic throughout the years, so hard to adapt? They have built-in appealing characters, narrative mythologies ripe for exploration, and even distinct visual looks that make them ideal for silver screen adaptation.

With Uncharted being the latest in a long line of disappointments (it's currently at 38% on Rotten Tomatoes), it begs the question: Have there been any decent films made from a video game? The genre has its fair share of so-bad-it's good films (Alone in the Dark and BloodRayne are good for some cheap laughs), but there have been only a handful of films, all released in the last five years, that have fully satisfied both audiences and critics.
