The Spider-Man reboot will get a digitally remastered IMAX 3D release

The upcoming reboot of the Spider-Man franchise doesn’t have an official title yet, but it does have some very big screens awaiting its arrival in theaters.

The 2017 film will be released in IMAX theaters when it premieres next year, and will also be digitally remastered for an IMAX 3D release. The announcement was made this week by Josh Greenstein, the president of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution for Sony Pictures, along with Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, and Greg Foster, the CEO of IMAX Entertainment.

Details regarding the plot of the upcoming film remain scarce, but the joint production of Sony and Marvel will serve to bring Peter Parker and his web-slinging alter ego into Marvel’s cinematic universe and feature actor Tom Holland as the new face of the wall-crawling hero. Holland is expected to make his debut as Spider-Man in this year’s Captain America: Civil War, which will bring together a long list of returning characters from the MCU and newcomers to the studio’s rapidly expanding universe.

“There’s so much about Spider-Man — including the web-slinging action — that lends itself perfectly to the IMAX screen,” said Greenstein in a statement accompanying the announcement. “We are confident that audiences everywhere around the world will want to see it in IMAX.”

Rather than being filmed in 3D, the IMAX 3D release of the film will use proprietary IMAX Digital Re-Mastering (DMR) software to format the film specifically for presentation in IMAX 3D theaters.

“IMAX’s long-standing relationship with Marvel and Sony first began with Spider-Man in 2002, establishing the ultimate way for fans to be transported into the world of their favorite characters like Peter Parker,” said Foster. “By re-teaming with our friends at Sony and Marvel on the newest Spider-Man reboot, we are excited to deliver audiences what they’re asking for: a must-see cinematic adventure — in IMAX.”

Directed by Cop Car filmmaker Jon Watts, the still-untitled Spider-Man movie will also feature Oscar-winning actress Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny) as Peter Parker’s Aunt May. The film is scheduled to hit theaters July 7, 2017.

Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

The MCU has plenty of upcoming projects that fans are excited about, but a potential fourth entry in Tom Holland's Spider-Man series is near the list's top. 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home ended with Holland's Peter entering a new phase in his life. Forgotten by the world and with no one left by his side, Peter is now closer to the perpetually down-on-his-luck version from the comics that fans have come to know and love. The ending is the perfect setup for a new Spidey adventure, with Spider-Man acting as the street-level hero he was always supposed to be. But who should he fight in his new adventure, especially now that he has no Avengers or Avengers-adjacent allies by his side?

Well, the possibilities are limitless. After all, Spider-Man has some of the best and most iconic villains in Marvel comics, and while many have already appeared in the Web Slinger's numerous live-action projects, some remain untouched by the film industry. From fearsome crime bosses to chameleonic supervillains, these infamous foes would make worthy enemies for Holland's Spider-Man.
