Paramount Pictures delays Star Trek Beyond release date, much to the dismay of fans

Sorry, Star Trek fans, the wait for the third installment in the Paramount Pictures sci-fi film franchise, Star Trek Beyond, has just gotten a little longer. The studio announced a new release date for the Justin-Lin directed flick: July 22. The film was previously set to hit theaters on July 8.

The studio didn’t specify why it has opted to keep fans waiting longer, but sources tell THR that it’s all in the name of getting Captain Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the gang on Imax. With Warner Bros.’ Tarzan opening on July 1, Star Trek Beyond would have been guaranteed to miss out on being shown in the special venues. Apparently, the two-week delay may change that.

The new date also brings new competition. Star Trek Beyond will now make its box office debut on the same day as Warner. Bros’ King Arthur and 20th Century Fox’s Ice Age: Collision Course. Interestingly, the competition seems stiffer than July 8’s openings: Universal Pictures’ The Secret Life of Pets and Fox’s Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. The decision shows that Paramount Pictures must feel confident in Star Trek Beyond (and why shouldn’t they?), as well as highlights the value of an Imax release.

Another Paramount Pictures franchise film did well in late July this year; Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation hit theaters on July 31. The Tom Cruise-starrer, which did hit Imax, has made over $189 at the domestic box office, according to Box Office Mojo. It makes sense to try the same formula.

Star Trek Beyond will bring back Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, and Zoe Saldana as Uhura, among others. New to the film is Lin, taking over for J.J. Abrams, who directed the movie’s two prequels: 2009’s Star Trek and 2013’s Star Trek: Into the Darkness. He’s bringing a different vibe, and we’ll have to wait to more weeks to see it.

Re-mark your calendar for Star Trek Beyond‘s theatrical release on July 22.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds review: Old school is new again
Rebecca Romijn, Anson Mount, and Ethan Peck walk in the hallway of the USS Enterprise in a scene from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

It might not have a big movie on the horizon, but Star Trek is still in a pretty great place right now. The long-running sci-fi franchise has multiple critically praised series currently in production, spanning a wide range of audience demographics and formats, from family-friendly space adventures (Star Trek: Prodigy) and serialized cosmic drama (Star Trek: Discovery and Picard) to raunchy animated comedy for adults (Star Trek: Lower Decks). That covers a lot of ground, but the latest addition to the franchise -- the Paramount+ series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds -- still manages to find plenty of fresh stories to tell in fascinating ways.

Created by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is ostensibly a spinoff from Star Trek: Discovery chronicling the adventures of Capt. Christopher Pike and the crew of the USS Enterprise after their appearance in season 2 of Discovery. The series brings back Anson Mount (Hell on Wheels) as Pike, along with Ethan Peck as Spock and Rebecca Romijn as Number One, Pike's second-in-command.

New Star Trek videos pave the way for Strange New Worlds

Casual Trekkies think that Star Trek began with Captain Kirk, Spock, and Dr. McCoy in the original series. However, the most passionate fans know that it all started with Captain Pike, his first officer, Number One, and a noticeably younger Spock in the unaired pilot, "The Cage." Nearly six decades later, the original crew of the Enterprise is finally getting its own show in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. And to set the stage for next week's series premiere, Paramount+ has released two new videos to allow both new and classic fans to boldly go into the future.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 brings back Next Generation cast
The cast of Star Trek: Nemesis.

Today, April 5, is First Contact Day to fans of Star Trek. It stems from a pivotal event in the film Star Trek: First Contact, which was one of four feature films to utilize the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation. That's why it's fitting that Paramount+ used today as the occasion to announce that the entire TNG cast will return for the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard.

Picard launched in 2020 as a showcase for Patrick Stewart's beloved Jean-Luc Picard, two decades after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis. In the first season of Picard,  Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis reprised their roles as Will Riker and Deanna Troi in guest appearances. Brent Spiner also appeared as the android Data and Dr. Altan Inigo Soong. But in the video below, Paramount+ confirmed that Michael Dorn's Worf, LeVar Burton's Geordi La Forge, and Gates McFadden's Dr. Beverly Crusher will also take part in this onscreen reunion in the upcoming season.
