Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 trailer unveils Lower Decks crossover

Crossovers are nothing new for the Star Trek franchise. That tradition began in 1987 when original series star DeForest Kelley reprised his role as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy in the first episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. But in the upcoming second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, there’s a unique crossover coming between this series and the animated program Star Trek: Lower Decks. For the first time in Star Trek history, two characters from an animated series will appear in live-action, and they will be portrayed by the same performers who provide their voices. As seen in the new Strange New Worlds trailer below, Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid are reprising their respective roles as Beckett Mariner and Brad Boimler.

The trailer doesn’t explain how or why Mariner and Boimler are on the Enterprise several decades before they were born. Lower Decks takes place after TNG, while Strange New Worlds is set about 10 years before the original Star Trek. So time travel shenanigans are almost certainly going to be a part of this story. However, it’s also clear that this crossover holds some personal significance for Boimler based on that he reacts to Spock (Ethan Peck) as if the iconic Vulcan is his personal hero.

Season 2’s story details are sparse in this trailer, but there definitely appears to be romance in the air between Spock and Christine Chapel (Jess Bush), as well as Dr. Joseph M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) and Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding). The previous trailer hinted that young James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) is attracted to La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong). But even Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and his first officer, Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn), are sharing a kiss in this preview, and that’s got to be against Starfleet regulations!

It might not have a big movie on the horizon, but Star Trek is still in a pretty great place right now. The long-running sci-fi franchise has multiple critically praised series currently in production, spanning a wide range of audience demographics and formats, from family-friendly space adventures (Star Trek: Prodigy) and serialized cosmic drama (Star Trek: Discovery and Picard) to raunchy animated comedy for adults (Star Trek: Lower Decks). Created by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is ostensibly a spinoff from Star Trek: Discovery chronicling the adventures of Capt. Christopher Pike and the crew of the USS Enterprise after their appearance in season 2 of Discovery. The series brings back Anson Mount (Hell on Wheels) as Pike, along with Ethan Peck as Spock and Rebecca Romijn as Number One, Pike's second-in-command.

Casual Trekkies think that Star Trek began with Captain Kirk, Spock, and Dr. McCoy in the original series. However, the most passionate fans know that it all started with Captain Pike, his first officer, Number One, and a noticeably younger Spock in the unaired pilot, "The Cage." Nearly six decades later, the original crew of the Enterprise is finally getting its own show in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. And to set the stage for next week's series premiere, Paramount+ has released two new videos to allow both new and classic fans to boldly go into the future.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 brings back Next Generation cast

Today, April 5, is First Contact Day to fans of Star Trek. It stems from a pivotal event in the film Star Trek: First Contact, which was one of four feature films to utilize the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation. That's why it's fitting that Paramount+ used today as the occasion to announce that the entire TNG cast will return for the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard.

Picard launched in 2020 as a showcase for Patrick Stewart's beloved Jean-Luc Picard, two decades after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis. In the first season of Picard,  Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis reprised their roles as Will Riker and Deanna Troi in guest appearances. Brent Spiner also appeared as the android Data and Dr. Altan Inigo Soong. But in the video below, Paramount+ confirmed that Michael Dorn's Worf, LeVar Burton's Geordi La Forge, and Gates McFadden's Dr. Beverly Crusher will also take part in this onscreen reunion in the upcoming season.
