As the title suggests, the new animated series will follow The Bad Batch — a group of clone troopers introduced in The Clone Wars who differ genetically from their fellow clones in ways that make them uniquely suited for dangerous missions. The series will be set in the aftermath of The Clone Wars, with the creative team on that series and other Star Wars animated shows teaming up behind the camera.

The story

According to Disney, The Bad Batch will follow the titular squad of troopers who made their debut in season 7 of The Clone Wars as they navigate a galaxy in turmoil after the events of the war between the Galactic Republic and The Separatists. In order to put their unique skills to use and find a new purpose, the troopers begin a career as mercenaries, undertaking dangerous missions throughout the galaxy.

The squad first introduced in the February 2020 episode of The Clone Wars included the team’s tracker, Sergeant Hunter; the superhumanly strong assault specialist, Wrecker; the eagle-eyed sniper, Crosshair; and the hyper-intelligent computer whiz, Tech.

Behind the camera

The creative team on The Bad Batch is a mixture of writers, producers, and directors from other animated Star Wars series, including Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Resistance, and Star Wars Rebels, among other projects.

The Bad Batch will be executive produced by The Clone Wars and The Mandalorian producer Dave Filoni, Athena Portillo (The Clone Wars, Rebels), Brad Rau (Rebels, Resistance), and Jennifer Corbett (Resistance). Carrie Beck (The Mandalorian, Rebels) will also serve as co-executive producer, along with Josh Rimes (Resistance) as series producer. Rau will be the series’ supervising director, while Corbett will serve as head writer for the show.

Disney debuted the official logo for Star Wars: The Bad Batch in the official announcement of the series.

Premiere date

Disney indicated that Star Wars: The Bad Batch will premiere on Disney+ in 2021, but has not announced a more specific date for the show’s debut at this time.

Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story isn't the most controversial Star Wars movie ever made, but it still inspires plenty of passionate debate among fans about the place it holds in the beloved sci-fi saga. Even casual movie lovers tend to know about ILM, or Industrial Light & Magic, the famous special effects unit that handled the original Star Wars trilogy on its way to becoming the most in-demand VFX creator in Hollywood. Fans have gasped at their innovative effects for 45 years, and now, they will get a chance to learn about the men and women who made ILM what it is today. Disney+ has released the first trailer for Light and Magic, a new six-part documentary series that chronicles the story of ILM from the late '70s to the present. So, it's fitting that the show is bookended by the original trilogy and The Mandalorian.

Obi-Wan Kenobi review: A superior Star Wars tale

A fairly tired trope that Lucasfilm has been using for years now is filling the gaps in and around the prequel and original Star Wars trilogies. That being said, aside from a new trilogy set beyond Return of the Jedi, an Ewan McGregor-led Obi-Wan Kenobi project has still arguably been the most in-demand Star Wars project for over a decade. The prequels may have been a mostly rocky endeavor, but if nothing else, Revenge of the Sith stuck the landing and proved to be a suitably grandiose Shakespearean-like tragedy that fits the "sci-fi space opera" subgenre that the franchise coined.

In the first two episodes reviewed by Digital Trends, Lucasfilm and Disney+'s Obi-Wan Kenobi limited series begins with a somber, melancholic look at the Star Wars universe struggling in a post-Order 66 galaxy, showing fans the last iteration of McGregor's revered Jedi Master, who deserves one final hurrah. With a new kind of threat forced upon him and a charming supporting character that is sure to please die-hard fans, Obi-Wan Kenobi is a triumphant return of a beloved character thanks to a compelling story and outstanding performances from the cast.
