Stranger Things 4 preview brings back a face from the past

After a nearly three-year wait, Stranger Things 4 is just a week away. But before the new season officially gets underway, Netflix has released the first eight minutes of the new season, and they aren’t for the faint of heart!

In this flashback to 1979, we’re reintroduced to Matthew Modine’s Dr. Martin Brenner, the man who made Eleven into a superhuman girl. We’ve known for a long time that Eleven wasn’t the only child who was experimented on over the years. However, we’ve never seen one of those experiments take such a dark turn as we do in this clip for both the kids and the scientists who work with them. In fact, this might be our first real glimpse of this year’s big bad villain, back when they were something closer to human.

Because Stranger Things 4 is much longer than previous seasons, Netflix is splitting it into two. The first seven episodes will premiere May 27, with episode 7 clocking in at 98 minutes. Only two episodes will be held back for volume 2 of Stranger Things 4 on July 1. But episode 8 will be 85 minutes, while the season finale is truly feature-length with a nearly two-and-a-half-hour runtime.

Stranger Things 4 Volume 2 trailer is ‘Running Up That Hill’
The cast of Stranger Things.

If you have any doubts about the continued cultural reach of Stranger Things, look no further than the resurgent popularity of '80s alt-rock star Kate Bush. One of Bush's songs, Running Up That Hill, was used to great effect in Stranger Things 4 when Max needed an anchor to reality. Without that song, Vecna would have claimed Max as his latest victim. In the real world, Running Up That Hill is getting so much play that it's becoming the song of the summer -- 37 years after it was first released. That's one of the reasons why Bush's anthem features so heavily in the new trailer for Stranger Things 4 Volume 2.

Stranger Things 4 Volume 2 teaser hints at the last showdown
The main villain of Stranger Things 4.

Without giving too much away for fans who haven't already made their way through the first part of Stranger Things 4, there's a showdown coming for the fate of the world. Humanity's future depends on Eleven as she takes on the malevolent Vecna. But in the new teaser trailer for Stranger Things 4, Volume 2, Vecna taunts Eleven by saying, "It is over, Eleven. You have freed me. You can't stop this now."

If that wasn't ominous enough, it looks like some of our favorite teens are directly in the line of fire from Vecna. Meanwhile, Jim Hopper has uncovered some disturbing things in Russia. It looks like demogorgons have been put on display. But messing with the Upside Down is a very bad idea. It always comes back to bite you in the end.
