‘Suicide Squad’ is on pace to make Warner Bros. proud at the box office

Warner Bros. needs a win for the DC Extended Universe, and it looks like Suicide Squad may deliver a big one. Early projections indicate that the film could set an August record by bringing in between $100 million to $125 million, according to Variety.

We’re still more than three weeks out from the opening of the superhero flick, but pre-release tracking suggests that fans are curious to see a villainous gang tasked with saving the day. The film brings together an ensemble cast full of big names playing familiar comic book characters, including Will Smith as Deadshot, Jared Leto as the Joker, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, not to mention an appearance from Ben Affleck as Batman. Together, they could overtake a record set by Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014 when the film opened to $94.32 million, according to Box Office Mojo data.

At this point, however, it is hard to say what the box office picture will actually look like come August. As Variety points out, reviews for the film may ultimately influence whether or not moviegoers show up. Let’s not forget that the most recent DCEU film, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, was predicted to be a box office hit; while its opening was impressive, the film’s box office earnings dropped off sharply in subsequent weeks as fans and critics alike proved to be largely unimpressed.

With Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. is hoping for a much different trajectory than it saw with Batman v Superman. In fact, the studio even reportedly ordered Suicide Squad reshoots to try to avoid a similar fate. If the cinematic universe hopes to compete with Marvel’s, it needs the numbers to back it up.

Suicide Squad, which is written and directed by David Ayer, hits theaters on August 5.

James Gunn teases Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, and GotG projects

Director James Gunn may be the busiest man in comic book movies and TV shows. After finishing The Suicide Squad, Gunn jumped to that film's HBO Max spinoff, Peacemaker, and he's now shooting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for Marvel.  But according to Gunn himself, he may have another HBO Max Suicide Squad spinoff in his future.

“We’re working on something else now, another TV show that’s connected to that universe,” said Gunn during an interview with Deadline's Hero Nation podcast.

MultiVersus brings Warner Bros. characters to Smash Bros.-style platform fighter
WB characters fight in MultiVersus.

Warner Bros. Games revealed its take on the platform fighter genre today with a trailer for MultiVersus. It pits iconic WB characters, from Batman to Tom and Jerry, against each other in Smash Bros.-style brawls. The game, which will include crossplay, is set to launch next year and will be free to play.

MultiVersus will emphasize social cooperative play, or duos as it's typically called in other platform fighters. In duos, two teams of two take each other on, with the team that comes out on top typically chaining together complex combos. MulitVersus is trying to deepen that theme by giving characters moves that are geared toward teammates first and foremost. Batman, for instance, can throw a smoke bomb to obscure his allies, and Steven Universe can throw his shield to protect his partner. It's a stark difference from Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, which was released earlier this year and is geared toward competitive solo play.

The Suicide Squad’s John Cena returns in the first Peacemaker teaser
John Cena in Peacemaker.

If you have no idea who Peacemaker is supposed to be, don't worry. Even among dedicated DC Comics fans, Peacemaker wasn't exactly an A-list comic book character before writer and director James Gunn placed him in The Suicide Squad earlier this year. Gunn cast former WWE wrestler John Cena as Peacemaker, and he must have liked what he saw in Cena's performance because out of every surviving member of Task Force X, Peacemaker is the only one who is getting a spinoff series on HBO Max.

As part of this morning's HBO Max Europe preview, fans got their first look at the new Peacemaker series. It's worth mentioning that Peacemaker's real name is Christopher Smith, but there's never a moment when he isn't Peacemaker. The concept of a secret identity is foreign to Christopher, and he can't resist wearing his new Peacemaker costume out to a casual dinner with his co-workers. Fair warning: There's a lot of NSFW language in the following clip.
