While we’re sad to hear that Charlize Theron might not be back as Imperator Furiosa for the Mad Max: Fury Road sequel, it looks like fans of her brand of badassery won’t be left completely in the lurch.

According to Deadline, Sony Pictures’ film adaptation of Mark Greaney’s The Gray Man, may be revamped to feature a female protagonist and Theron is in talks to be its leading lady.

On its face, this seems like somewhat of a challenge. First, the whole XY thing is sort of built right into the title: The Gray MAN. Second, the book is about a CIA-trained assassin who evades his enemies while saving the lives of the daughters he didn’t know he had.

Still, the studio believes it can work it out. Because Charlize Theron.

She’s one of the few actresses in Hollywood whose name is enough to allay the fears and doubts of skittish execs. Angelina Jolie is also on that short list and Sony pulled this exact same trick with her in Salt, which was originally set to star some guy named Tom Cruise.

Some other guy named Brad Pitt was originally in talks to star in The Gray Man film, but the deck was reshuffled and the studio is now looking at a new direction.

Mad Max: Fury Road made it abundantly clear that Theron can carry any kind of film she wants, and it will be interesting to see how this changes the script that Joe and Anthony Russo originally drafted.

While fans of the source material might be disappointed to see the novel changed so drastically, we can’t help but be excited at the prospect of Theron putting her boot to a few more backsides.

We’ll keep you up to date with the details as they emerge.

Everything you need to know about Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Miles Morales in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

The genesis of Miles Morales can be traced to a fan casting suggestion that called for Donald Glover to be the next Spider-Man on the big screen. While Andrew Garfield was ultimately cast as Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man, comic book writer Brian Michael Bendis was inspired by the fan-driven Glover campaign to make a new Spider-Man. In 2011, Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli created Miles Morales, a biracial teenager who was both African American and Puerto Rican. Although Miles was created for Marvel's Ultimate line, his popularity led to his inclusion alongside Peter Parker in Marvel's regular comics. And after a starring role in 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Miles became a true pop culture sensation.

This summer, Miles is back on the big screen with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Almost every Spider-Hero from the first film is also returning, alongside an astonishing group of Spider-Men and Spider-Women from all over the multiverse. Even comic book fans can be overwhelmed when there are so many variations to keep track of in a single movie. Not to worry, though. We've got you covered with everything you need to know about Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

The Gray Man stinks! Why Netflix has never made a great action movie
ryan gosling five most badass roles the gray man

Few streaming services have worked as hard as Netflix has in recent years to launch a true blockbuster. The Gray Man has been a tremendous success for the service, at least according to their own internal metrics, but it's hardly the first time that they've attempted to launch a piece of original intellectual property by throwing massive amounts of money at it. In spite of all that money, though, Netflix has yet to produce the kind of brilliant action spectacle that makes for a truly great movie.

That doesn't mean, though, that Netflix has never made a great movie. Plenty of their prestige, awards-season plays have totally panned out, and movies like The Power of the Dog and Marriage Story have proven that the streamer can get behind great movies. In the world of action, though, their movies have been pretty thoroughly lacking. The Gray Man is just one of many attempts that seems great on paper but doesn't ultimately deliver on its promise.
