It’s a teenage wasteland in first photos from new Walking Dead spinoff series

Ratings for The Walking Dead aren’t what they used to be, but that isn’t stopping AMC from launching a third series set in the world of the hit zombie survival drama.

The still-untitled series will follow two female protagonists as they attempt to live in a world filled with threats — both human and zombie — around every corner, and will unfold in the same universe as the network’s two existing series, The Walking Dead and and Fear the Walking Dead. AMC released a set of six photos from the series ahead of its panel event at New York Comic-Con on Saturday, October 5.

The new series will be co-created by Scott Gimple, chief content officer for The Walking Dead projects at AMC, and Matt Negrete, a writer and producer on The Walking Dead. Negrete will serve as showrunner on the project, which is expected to begin production on its first, 10-episode season this summer.

Although details of the series are being kept under wraps, the show is expected to showcase young women who are growing up in the apocalyptic environment of The Walking Dead. While some indulge their darker instincts, others rise to the occasion.

Announced cast members for the series so far include Aliyah Royale, Alexa Mansour, Annet Mahendru, Nicolas Cantu, Hal Cumpston, and Nico Tortorella.

“In the end, all of them will be changed forever. Grown-up and cemented in their identities, both good and bad,” reads a synopsis of the series by The Verge.

More news on The Walking Dead

Viewership on The Walking Dead has gone down in recent years, with the most recent seasons being some of the lowest-rated of the series so far. However, the show still remains one of the most-watched series on cable television overall, only ranking behind major sports and news programs. Due to its high viewership, The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead are also huge generators of advertising revenue for AMC — a situation that certainly plays into the decision to expand the series.

“We believe in the underlying vitality of the Walking Dead universe,” said Sarah Barnett, the president of AMC’s entertainment networks. “Walking Dead itself continues to be the number-one show by some margin … This show just continues to be an incredible boon for us. It’s something another cable or streaming network would actually kill for.”

The new series will premiere on AMC in the spring of 2020.

Tales of the Walking Dead is a refreshing take for the zombie franchise
Alpha/Dee and Lydia covered in blood in a scene from Tales of the Walking Dead.

As the original The Walking Dead series gears up for its 11th and final season commencing October 2, fans have been inundated with announcements of new and upcoming spinoffs to keep the franchise alive. The most recent is the six-episode anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead. What’s most surprising about this series, which aired its six-episode first season on AMC in mid-August through to late September, is that, unlike others such as Fear the Walking Dead and Walking Dead: World Beyond, you don’t need to watch the original to truly appreciate the show and understand what’s going on. These are standalone, compartmentalized stories with no continuity or crossovers with the original beyond the dystopian state of the world…and the team behind it.

Like the other Walking Dead series, the undead roam the streets, looking to satiate their voracious appetites for human flesh. But the characters and stories are completely unique not only from the main show, but from one another as well. Each episode has its own distinct look and feel, fitting into different genres that will make you laugh, cry, wince, and jump out of your seat. Since there are no connections, you can watch them in any order as well.

AMC releases new pics from Interview With the Vampire series
Sam Reid and Jacob Anderson in Interview With the Vampire.

The Walking Dead may be winding down on AMC, but the network is about to double down on the children of the night. AMC is adapting Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles novels for television, starting with her debut story, Interview With the Vampire. That 1976 novel was previously adapted as a feature film in 1994. However, modern attitudes toward sexuality means that the new adaptation won't have to downplay its gay subtext.

While the new series won't premiere until later this year, AMC has released four new pictures that offer fans a first look at the stars. Game of Thrones veteran Jacob Anderson will portray Louis de Pointe du Lac, a man who was offered eternal life by the vampire named Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid). Louis was portrayed by Brad Pitt in the 1994 film, while Tom Cruise played Lestat.
